In a quieter spot on famous Ocean Drive, a couple of blocks from the action
Though located on famous Ocean Drive, the Sense Hotel is in a quieter spot, a couple of blocks from the action of South Beach. The area surrounding the hotel doesn't have the typical Ocean Drive look and vibe -- there are no restaurants clustered side by side with hostesses hawking menus at passersby, rowdy tourists are few and far between, most buildings are not in the Art Deco style that the area is known for, and though most rooms at the hotel offer partial ocean views, the water is merely glimpsed between apartment buildings.
However, the Sense is only a short walk from the noisy center of South Beach, across the street from Lumus Park, the liveliest area on the beach. Bikini babes and muscle-bound dudes play beach volleyball, and merchants sell T-shirts, coconuts, and cheap jewelry near the boardwalk. An additional contingent of seniors and families also take in the Art-Deco architectural sights.
The 18-room Sense Hotel has a modern, minimalist look throughout, starting with the stark white lobby and continuing with the neon orange-lit hallways and the sleek, sexy rooms (which feature photographic murals covering the walls behind the comfy beds). The spacious rooms are definitely the highlight, with updated amenities such as iPod docks and flat-screen TVs, and nice bathrooms with walk-in showers and teak accents. But those looking for extra amenities (or really any amenities) will be disappointed -- there is no fitness center, spa, or restaurant (although there's talk of one being planned), and the rooftop pool is small and doesn't have the hip vibe (or the drink service) that many other SoBe hotel pools have. Therefore, it's surprising that the hotel charges a resort fee (it covers in-room Wi-Fi and beach and towel rentals). That aside, the hotel is in a nice location on a quieter spot of Ocean Drive -- still just a block from the beach and a short walk from the center of the SoBe action.
