Less than 10 minutes from the airport and short drive to Monterey Bay, but in a not-so-charming business district
Located in a business-oriented part of Old Town, near a Denny's and a Thai restaurant, the area around Casa Munras lacks the beauty and charm of other Monterey hotels. But the hotel property itself is quite charming, especially the outdoor social spaces. Plus, the hotel is less than 10 minutes from Monterey Peninsula Airport and is walking distance to tons of local bars, restaurants, and shops. Fisherman's Wharf is just 15 minute away, as is Pebble Beach.
Many people know of Monterey from the writer John Steinbeck, who shared a genuine passion for this picturesque coastal town, as expressed through many of his acclaimed novels. Travelers enter the town via the winding Highway 1, which showcases the rocky cliffs, sea lions, and beautiful misty shores that Northern California is known for. Monterey is also known as having one of the most distinctively historic downtown areas west of Santa Fe.
This upper-middle-range hacienda-style hotel in Old Town Monterey claims to be rich in Spanish heritage, but looks more like a traditional chain hotel. The ivy and flower-covered exterior is pretty, as is the modern lobby with a stone fireplace and cozy leather chairs, but something about the place is almost too "done" to feel authentic. The rooms are spacious and feature some modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and some have cozy fireplaces. But the real pleasure of this hotel lies in its social outdoor spaces. Candles, fire pits and cozy seating invite guests to gather outside -- and most do in the evenings. For a mid-range hotel, the spa here is fantastic -- that, along with the tapas restaurant, outdoor pool, and convenient location -- make this hotel a great pick, especially at its affordable price.
