Bottom Line

The 198-room Hotel Ruby Foo's lies about 10 minutes outside of Montreal's downtown area, next to a major highway. The hotel started as a restaurant hot spot in the 1950s, evolved into a hotel in 1962, and became the commercial complex it is now in 1988. Interiors emphasize modern, Asian-inspired decor with rich, dark colors, giving the rooms a sophisticated (if not luxurious) feel. A full lineup of features -- two restaurants, a bar, a large 24-hour gym, a heated outdoor pool, eight meeting rooms, and an old-fashioned barber shop -- is a highlight that gives diversions for guests removed from the city center. But guest who prefer to be downtown could consider the Hilton Garden Inn Montreal Centre-ville, which is in the same price category and also has a pool, steam room, sauna, and top-floor fitness center.

Oyster Hotel Review

Hotel Ruby Foo’s

Scene

Blocky exterior gives way to large, appealing lobby with stylish touches and Asian elements

Blocky and rather unappealing from the outside, Hotel Ruby Foo’s has a large, pleasant lobby with character beyond the usual chain-hotel aesthetic. The Asian-influenced design theme includes splashes of red against brown and slate. Raised wood paneling in the reception area adds texture and interest, and block lights in metal frames hang from the ceiling. Chinese prints in hallways and rich, red-patterned carpets continue the look. But other areas like the pool and the restaurant abandon the theme for something fresher and airier (though just as stylish). Guests here tend to be families or couples drawn by the hotel's personality and its ample list of amenities.

Location

About 10 miles outside of Montreal's downtown, in Côte-des-Neiges

Ruby Foo's is located right next to a major highway, a few minutes' walk to public transit and several restaurants (though the area isn't exceptionally pedestrian-friendly).

Ten miles outside of Downtown Montreal, Côte-des-Neiges is a multicultural, mostly residential neighborhood that's home to both students and immigrants. Although it has a few tourist attractions, like St. Joseph’s Oratory, Université de Montréal, and the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre, this area only offers a taste of what the rest of Montreal has to offer. Downtown's main attractions are a 15- to 20-minute drive away.

  • four-minute walk to Namur metro station
  • six-minute drive to Mount Royal
  • 12-minute drive to Université de Montréal
  • 15-minute drive to Underground City
  • 15-minute drive to Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport
  • 17-minute drive to Basilique Notre-Dame
  • 17-minute drive to Montreal Botanical Garden
  • 20-minute drive to Old Montreal

Rooms

Spacious and attractive rooms with comfortable beds and large bathrooms -- but lean on technology

Updated rooms at the Hotel Ruby Foo’s are spacious and attractive, with low-key color schemes and artful Asian-inspired touches. Kings and double queens are available, with dark striped carpet and lavender accents or blue carpet with orange accents; dark doors bring teak to mind. Cherrywood furniture -- which unfortunately shows every scratch and nick -- includes nightstands, chests of drawers, and large desks. Attractive, comfortable beds have pillow-top mattresses and goose down duvets and pillows. Shoji-inspired sliding window coverings are a nice touch. However, rooms are a bit lean on technology, with a 32-inch flat-screen TV but no docking station or personal safe. Each has a mini-fridge and espresso-maker. Studio-Kitchenette units are available as well, each with a queen bed, loveseat, and a tiny kitchen cleverly fit in. Kitchenettes are well equipped, with stainless steel sinks, four-top electric stoves, microwaves, and mini-fridges. Each comes with dishes, cutlery, and some kitchen tools, and a small bar seats two. White tile bathrooms in all rooms are large and generic, with Aquabrass massage showers over tubs, magnifying mirrors, hairdryers, toiletries, and plush robes.

Features

Numerous amenities including a large gym with sauna, seasonal outdoor pool, two restaurants, and a barber

For a mid-range hotel, Ruby Foo’s shines in amenities, starting with its 24-hour gym. It's large enough to have men’s and women’s locker rooms and a lounge. Multiple machines, including cross trainers, treadmills, stair machines, and stationary bikes cover all the cardio standards. Free weights, weight-training machines, and a punching bag are also available. The gym includes a sauna and private whirlpool room for one. The hotel also has a large heated outdoor pool -- open in summer only – with lots of striped loungers and a pleasant covered patio area for refreshments. Lifeguard service is a plus for families.

The on-site Eggspectation restaurant is a worldwide chain that serves a decent brunch, and Otago restaurant has a pizza oven and serves international cuisine. The hotel’s on-site barber, Gino and Dino Barber Shop, offers old-fashioned straight-razor shaves in an old-school atmosphere. For business travelers, the 24-hour business center has two computers and a laser printer. The hotel has eight banquet and meeting rooms that can accommodate 5,000 people, complete with technology and catering. Concierge services are available, and on-site parking and Wi-Fi are free.
