Bottom Line

There’s a lot of promise at the two-and-a-half-pearl Carolinian Beach Resort. In 2017, it updated 100 rooms to a contemporary style not often seen among the Myrtle Beach beachfront properties and are planning to do the same with the Suites (which have kitchens) in 2018. A free hot breakfast is a nice perk, but there’s no restaurant or bar on-site. Families and couples have a lot of water amenities to choose from, from the beach to lazy rivers, hot tubs, and indoor and outdoor pools. One major annoyance is resort fees, weekend surcharges, and marketing fees added to rates. Couples enjoy Carolinian Beach Resort’s relaxed and not overly family-focused vibe, but might consider North Beach Plantation which has an upscale design, spa, and swim-up bar.

Oyster Hotel Review

Carolinian Beach Resort

Scene

Relaxed hotel with generic public spaces and oceanfront views

There’s a low-key vibe to the Carolinian Beach Resort which guests seem to like. The lobby is more functional than attractive with tiled floors and wood accents in the front desk and benches and chairs. It does the trick by getting travelers checked in quickly, so they can enjoy the pools or beachfront location. The same can be said of the plain breakfast room with tiled floors and chain-like tables and chairs. The pools with oceanfront views are the main public spaces. In terms of clientele, families and couples are almost evenly split -- an aspect that perhaps keeps the noise level and busy atmosphere within reasonable limits. While it’s not the priciest resort in Myrtle Beach, be aware that there are a lot of surcharges added to a bill like resort fees, weekend surcharges, and marketing fees.

Location

Beachfront property in Central Myrtle Beach, about a 28-minute walk to the boardwalk

The resort has an ideal position for travelers to enjoy a beach vacation on a quieter stretch a beachfront property in Myrtle Beach. There are plenty of dining options (a pancake house, sub shop, and pizza restaurant) on surrounding streets. Expect a 28-minute walk from the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Promenade and 10 minutes to mini-golf. Broadway at the Beach is a seven-minute drive away, as is the Family Kingdom Amusement Park. Several golf courses take a 10- or 12-minute drive to reach. It takes 12 minutes by car to reach the Myrtle Beach International Airport.

Rooms

Mix of updated and dated rooms with either microwaves and mini-fridges or kitchens

Rooms are divided into two buildings: The Hotel and The Tower, and guests can expect a slight discrepancy between two buildings. Rooms in The Hotel feature wood laminate floors that pair well with the dark furniture and seafoam green walls. Black and white photography adds a hint of sophistication. Then there’s the remaining Suites in The Tower. These are dated with blue carpet that makes the faded yellow accents brighter than they are and old-fashioned wooden furniture doesn't look much better. These units are expected to be updated in 2018.

While all rooms have flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, balconies (some with full ocean views), and coffeemakers, only the Suites have kitchens with refrigerators, microwaves, dishwashers, sinks, stoves, and ovens. The updated rooms, alternatively, have microwaves and mini-fridges. There are also Club Level Rooms which get extra perks like free bottled water, entrance to a manager’s reception of snacks and drinks, and access to the Club Lounge. Bathrooms aren’t very notable as they come with shower/tub combos, Eden toiletries, and hairdryers. Take note that there have been complaints about housekeeping services. Smoking is not allowed on the balconies.

Features

Water features are the main highlight, followed by a free breakfast and a gym

Travelers will find that there’s plenty to do at the Carolinian Beach Resort beyond the beachfront location. There’s a slew of water features that include indoor lazy rivers with inner tubes, indoor and outdoor pools, hot tubs, and kids’ pools. Adults can enjoy a small fitness center with a handful of cardio machines, while kids can watch free DVD rentals.

There’s no restaurant or bar on-site, but guests start the day with a free hot breakfast buffet that includes sausages, eggs, and pastries. Business travelers will find a business center and a Club Lounge with a small kitchen, card table, and foosball. Free Wi-Fi and self-parking are excellent features. Paid valet parking is available for a fee.
