White Elephant Village | Residences & Inn Rating: 4.5 Pearls

With over 100 miles of free, public sandy shores, Nantucket -- a Native American word meaning "land far out to sea" -- is basically one big beach. And, as a result, this tiny island 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts attracts a wide spectrum of visitors all looking for that unique beach stay. Thankfully, boutiques across the breadth of Nantucket stand ready to accept the masses. Here are some of our favorite intimate stays: The big, luxurious one- to three-bedroom units at White Elephant Residences are a good choice for families and groups. Unlike vacation home rentals, these units come with the perks of a hotel stay -- daily housekeeping, a seasonal outdoor pool, and a well-equipped fitness center. As to be expected, however, privacy and luxury don't come cheap on this island.

Unlike vacation home rentals, these units come with the perks of a hotel stay -- daily housekeeping, a seasonal outdoor pool, and a well-equipped fitness center. As to be expected, however, privacy and luxury don't come cheap on this island. The decor at the White Elephant is modern island style, with whicker, blond and white woods, colorful accents, and an overall upscale feel. The beds are plush and comfortable, and the bathrooms are large and modern. Living areas have gas fireplaces and large flat-screen TVs. Each unit also features a living area, washer/dryer, and a kitchen complete with luxury appliances. Nantucket tends to evoke an image of classic New England decor and luxury. The 18-room Veranda House offers luxury, but in a chic and modern setting that sets it apart from the many historic inns and hotels on the island. You'll pay a good amount for these trendy rooms , but high rates come standard in the area. The Veranda House is a great choice for young adults or couples, with a central downtown location and no children under 10 allowed. Guests come to Natucket to get away from it all -- and with a remote location away from downtown, The Wauwinet is about as away from it as you can get. The charming New England property is surrounded by both the bay and the ocean, and some (bayside) guest rooms offer amazing sunsets. One of the island's most loved restaurants is at The Wauwinet, which is just another reason the rates are so high -- especially during the peak summer months. The rates also account for the large list of freebies, including this dapper shuttle that takes guests downtown, continental breakfast daily, Wi-Fi, and a wine and cheese hour in the afternoon. One of the oldest inns on the island, Jared Coffin House gives travelers a taste of Nantucket history and classic New England style. The inn, open year-round and centrally located near the downtown area, also features the elegant and popular Brick Bistro restaurant. Floral wallpaper, patterned throw rugs, four-poster beds , and antique-type furnishings are common to all the rooms, though no two are exactly alike. Some of the rooms and bathrooms at the Jared Coffin House are small, but all combine antique-style furnishings with modern features, such as flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. For an authentic New England inn experience, the Centerboard Guest House is a great choice -- offering up an historic Nantucket home close to all the shopping and dining of the downtown area, as well as a short walk to the Children's Beach. The inn features charming rooms, each with its own decor and feel, and an innkeeper that creates a true bed-and-breakfast-style stay. Some rooms and bathrooms are a bit tight on space, though, and decor in certain areas may feel dated. The Cottages & Lofts at Boat Basin are perfect for families and groups looking for something other than a typical hotel or B&B stay. The self-contained cottages and lofts offer all the perks of a private vacation rental with the benefit of hotel features such as daily housekeeping and access to a nearby spa. Pet-lovers will be happy at the Cottages, too, because furry members of the family are allowed within certain cottages for an extra fee. The location directly on the Harbor means the views are fairly spectacular, too.
