Bottom Line

It's no wonder royalty, A-list celebrities, and athletes keep returning to the luxury Calistoga Ranch: It's in a class all by itself. Guests rent exquisite private lodges, set on a private 157-acre park-like property complete with hiking trails and a top-of-the-line restaurant and spa. Attention to detail carries over from room design to landscape planning -- all modules for the lodges were flown in by helicopter to minimize impact on surrounding trees and to maximize privacy. The property boasts plenty of activities, including outdoor yoga, a beautiful heated outdoor pool, a bocce court, a fabulous fitness center, and wine tasting seminars. If guests decide to venture out for some reason, they can easily access downtown Calistoga and other towns with not only loaner bikes, but loaner Mercedes-Benzes! This property stands out as one of the most remarkable not just in Napa Valley but in the entire country.

Calistoga Ranch, Auberge Resorts Collection

Scene

Exceptional private homes, called lodges, have secluded settings on a forested, 157-acre property

The lodges at Calistoga Ranch beautifully complement their untouched natural surroundings. They feature plenty of wood and stone, and are made up of separate "modules" built around an outdoor living room. The living room is complete with a fireplace, gorgeous furniture, a top-of-the-line grill, and a fantastic outdoor rain shower.

Bedroom modules (there are one- and two-bedroom lodges available) have chic contemporary design with flat-screen TVs, Italian linens, working fireplaces, floor-to-ceiling windows and spacious bathrooms with large soaking tubs (plus an outdoor Jacuzzi). Living room modules have exquisite furniture, flat-screen TVs, gorgeous floors, a fireplace, and plenty of seating. And the kitchen/dining room modules are state-of-the art, with stainless steel appliances, and granite countertops. Overall, the decor is sharp and pristine, and the colors reflect those of the natural surroundings.

Location

In a very secluded, forested northern Napa Valley setting, a short drive from downtown Calistoga

Calistoga Ranch is located on the northern ridge of Napa Valley in Calistoga. Guests pay good money for the privacy and seclusion the resort provides, but it's still within easy driving distance of downtown Calistoga, other Napa Valley towns and plenty of wineries.

Calistoga's name is said to come from a Freudian slip made by the town's founder while trying to describe it as the Saratoga of California: In many ways, they've succeeded in recreating the same quaint, relaxed vibe. The area is well known for its many natural hot springs and has been a wellness destination for visitors for over a century. Of course, the town has also had the fortune of California's booming wine industry growing up in and around it.

  • 94-minute drive to Oakland International Airport
  • 108-minute drive to San Francisco International Airport
  • 2-minute drive to the Silverado Trail, a strip of Napa Valley's wineries and vineyards
  • 11-minute drive to St. Helena
  • 12-minute drive to shopping, dining and nightlife on Calistoga's main drag
  • 12-minute drive to the Calistoga Spa Hot Springs, naturally heated mineral baths
  • 13-minute drive to wine tasting at Chateau Montelena Winery, winners of the historic Judgment of Paris
  • 14-minute drive to Old Faithful Geyser of California
  • 37-minute drive to the Napa Valley Wine Train
  • 38-minute drive to the Napa Valley Opera House
  • 43-minute drive to the Di Rosa Preserve and Art Gallery
  • 54-minute drive to Sonoma
  • 1-hour, 40-minute drive to San Francisco
