Most guests equate the 22-room Best Western to more of a cozy bed and breakfast than a mid-range chain. Perhaps it's due to the personal touches -- such as the freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, milk, and apple cider served in the lobby every afternoon. The hotel capitalizes on its homey feel -- some rooms offer fireplaces, terraces (though overlooking a parking lot or street), or Jacuzzis , and the furniture and decor is quaint, if not high-quality. The place does lack some facilities that other mid-range hotels have -- there is no pool (just a Jacuzzi), fitness center, or restaurant. The Best Western Elm House Inn is just within walking distance of downtown Napa -- if you're up to a 20-minute walk. And its proximity to Highway 29 makes it a great home base for winery hopping.
Napa is one of the world's best wine-growing regions, with hundreds of wineries sprawling over rolling hills. Napa valley, unlike its neighbor Sonoma Valley, can occasionally feel a little touristy (it's not uncommon to see a tour bus parked at a winery), and it also feels geared toward visitors with cash to spend -- so those with lighter wallets might feel a little out of place. The beauty of the valley is striking at any time of the year, but especially during the harvest season (September and October) and spring. It can get very busy during the summer months, so expect crowds.
