Review Summary

Photos and Review by

  • Large, elegant rooms with classic decor, plush beds and modern amenities
  • Wine tasting cave and vineyards (with a trail) on-site
  • Luxurious spa with steam grottos, couples rooms and dipping pools, and a well-equipped fitness center
  • Good farm-to-table restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating
  • Large heated pool with vineyard views and seasonal poolside service
  • Intimate private wedding chapel on-site
  • Wi-Fi, parking, tea and coffee, and evening shuttle to/from Napa included in resort fee
  • Environmentally conscious practices

  • Unattractive immediate neighborhood and nothing within walking distance
  • Pushy timeshare sales team
  • Resort fee (but very reasonable)

Bottom Line

This luxurious 158-room property, which saw a $40 million expansion in 2012, has everything the quaint Wine Country boutique hotels offer, but at a larger scale thanks to a long list of outstanding extras that make the stay ultra-convenient. Despite not being in the most attractive part of Napa Valley, the resort manages to make you see past that with large, elegant rooms featuring classic decor, plush beds and modern amenities, and a long list of great freebies (an evening shuttle to Napa, Wi-Fi, and parking -- all included in the inexpensive resort fee). The upscale 22,000 square-foot spa, the intimate wine tasting room, the beautiful on-site vineyards, and the solid farm-to-table restaurant make it possible for guests to have a real Wine Country experience without leaving the property.

In southern Napa Valley, a 15-minute drive to downtown Napa and close to wonderful wineries, great golf, and shopping

Map of The Meritage Resort and Spa

The Meritage is located in the southern edge of Napa Valley, less than a 15-minute drive from downtown Napa and close to a couple of outstanding golf courses. There’s nothing within walking distance, but you’ll find several great wineries within a few minutes’ drive, and proximity to Highway 29 means easy access to the region’s quaint towns, great shopping and golf, and acclaimed restaurants.

Napa is one of the world's best wine-growing regions, with hundreds of wineries sprawling over rolling hills. Napa Valley, unlike its neighbor Sonoma Valley, can occasionally feel a little touristy (it's not uncommon to see a tour bus parked at a winery), and it also feels geared toward visitors with cash to spend -- so those with lighter wallets might feel a little out of place. The beauty of the valley is striking at any time of the year, but especially during the harvest season (September and October) and spring. It can get very busy during the summer months, so expect crowds

  • 1-hour drive to Oakland Airport
  • 70-minute drive to San Francisco International Airport
  • 10-minute drive to Napa Valley Wine Train
  • 10-minute drive to the Napa Valley Opera House
  • 10-minute drive to Chardonnay Country Club and Eagle Vines Golf Club
  • 13-minute drive to downtown Napa
  • 25-minute drive to Rutherford, home to world-class wineries
  • 25-minute drive to Sonoma, more laid-back and less tourist-y than Napa Valley
  • 30-minute drive to scenic St. Helena
  • 32-minute drive to the renowned Culinary Institute of America, with cooking demonstrations
