Bottom Line

Located in the heart of the French Quarter and just one-minute away from lively Bourbon Street, Olivier House Hotel is a charming two-and-a-half-pearl, boutique-style property with 42 guest rooms. This old courtyard mansion has oodles of Old World charm. Guest rooms are arranged around two delightful inner courtyards filled with plants and trees; while the balconies provide views of the greenery and swimming pool below. Rooms and suites are decorated in an old-fashioned style with antique furniture, fireplaces, and oil paintings. Downsides include noise and lack of a restaurant or breakfast service. A similar historic property in the French Quarter worth considering as an alternative is the mid-range Hotel Provincial.

Olivier House Hotel

Scene

Historic townhouse with a romantic atmosphere

Olivier House Hotel occupies a delightful townhouse made up of two- and three-story structures on a street corner of the French Quarter. It’s red facade, dark window shutters, typical New Orleans-style balconies, and many hanging plants give it noteworthy charm that's indicative of Creole Greek architecture. This historic property dates back to 1839 when it was built for the wealthy Olivier family, and has been functioning as a hotel since 1970. Inner balconies overlook two lush courtyards filled with trees and potted plants, and one has a good-size swimming pool. The interiors are decorated in a fussy, ornate style that may be a bit too old fashioned for some tastes, but fits in with the historic character of the property: Pink walls decorated with oil paintings, antique lamps hanging in the corridors, richly patterned floral carpets, marble fireplaces, gilded mirrors, and period furniture. A sitting room on the ground floor is a cozy space where guests can relax, mingle and enjoy the free refreshments available. The hotel is geared toward couples and families who want to experience the unique atmosphere of the French Quarter.

Charming and distinctive rooms and suites with period features

Each of the guest rooms and suites at Olivier House Hotel has its own unique charm and is distinctive in terms of both size and layout. Many of the suites are split over two floors, with the bedroom on the upper floor and living and dining areas on the lower level. Some have balconies overlooking the streets of the French Quarter, or one of the leafy inner courtyards. The rooms and suites have many period features like high ceilings, exposed brick walls, hardwood floors, French-style doors, and fireplaces. Interiors are decorated in a similar style with period furniture, oil paintings, antique furnishings, rich upholstery, and Oriental rugs. All the rooms are equipped with a free Wi-Fi connection, air-conditioning, ceiling fans, flat-screen TVs, microwave ovens, coffeemakers, and fridges. Some have kitchenettes with sinks. Like the guest rooms, bathrooms vary in size, and generally feature granite sink tops, large gilded mirrors, and spacious walk-in showers or bathtubs, some with both.

Some guests have complained about the ambient street noise in the street-facing rooms. For this reason, each guest room and suite also has a white-noise sound machine to aid sleep.
