Bottom Line

Located outside the tourist zone in an area near Penn Station and the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, this 220-room DoubleTree is a fine option for conventioneers, who could benefit from the location, free Wi-Fi, business center, and meeting room. Leisure travelers should research the many comparable hotels that are closer to more attractions, such as the Hilton Garden Inn New York/Times Square Central.

Oyster Hotel Review

Doubletree By Hilton – Times Square South

Scene

A serviceable hotel for Javits attendees

This Garment District chain hotel has rooms that are blandly decorated, but well-maintained; a gym that's modest, but open 24 hours; and an on-site restaurant that's mediocre, but features a glass dining area and a garden (rare in NYC). Most of its appeal is oriented towards business travelers and convention folk, who will appreciate its location two blocks from the Javits center, free Wi-Fi, meeting room, and computer area with free printing.

Location

On a less-populated block eight blocks south and west of Times Square, about a five- to 10-minute walk from the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center

The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel New York - Times Square South is significantly outside the flashing ad space in Times Square, on a dull (but not unsafe) block just north of Penn Station and the Greyhound bus depot. It's a bit farther from the more desirable parts of Midtown West; the hip restaurants and gay bars in Hell's Kitchen are about 10 blocks north, and the tourist must-sees like Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, and Fifth Avenue department stores are all about a 30-minute walk away.

  • Three blocks from the A, C, E subway lines; four blocks from the 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, S, subway lines; six blocks from the B, D, F, M subway lines
  • Six-minute walk to Madison Square Garden
  • 20-minute subway ride to Central Park
  • 10-minute walk to Times Square
  • 15-minute walk to the Empire State Building

Rooms

Rooms are even smaller than average, but contain a few perks

The room decor here is chain-like, of course, but almost egregiously so. Picture beige wallpaper, brown patterned carpets, and framed NYC stock-photo prints.

Standard rooms have either one king or queen bed or two double beds; all have compact dimensions. Regardless, all of the expected comforts are in place, like 42-inch flat-screen TVs, double-cup coffeemakers, hairdryers, and ice buckets. There are even a few extras: work desks with ergonomic Herman Miller chairs, mini-fridges, hypoallergenic down pillows, MP3-enabled alarm clocks, free daily newspapers, and free Wi-Fi.

Some rooms offer views of the Empire State Building and New York skyline, and handicap-accessible rooms are available.

Features

Though it's closed during the day, the on-site restaurant, Greenhouse 36, serves breakfast and dinner in its pleasant atrium-like dining room or on its outdoor patio. The restaurant has a kids' menu and available high chairs. Its bar offers daily happy-hour specials.

The hotel also has a 24-hour fitness center, three computers (one PC and two Macs) and a printer, and a 12-person meeting room with a large flat-screen TV, a projector, and a podium.

Pets under 35 pounds are welcome with a nonrefundable fee.
