Bottom Line

This mid-range hotel offers a range of extras that make it a solid value, including free Wi-Fi and free breakfast (the only hot items, however, are heat-and-eat egg sandwiches). The indoor/outdoor rooftop bar, which is particularly popular during the summer, boasts views of the Hudson. Contemporary rooms feature spacious work desks, large flat-screen TVs, and iPod docks. There is a fitness center, though it's small and lacks weight-training machines, and the Midtown West location is within walking distance of Times Square -- but the street is gritty. All in all, it offers decent value for the area, but it may be worth comparing rates with the TRYP New York City Times Square South, which is more upscale but often similarly priced.

Oyster Hotel Review

Fairfield Inn & Suites New York Manhattan Times Square

Scene

The Fairfield attracts all kinds of travelers, but especially sightseeing families who appreciate the hotel’s reasonable rates and proximity to Times Square.

The Fairfield is reminiscent of the many chain properties in its Midtown West neighborhood; room decor is simple but clean, and tourists mill about the lobby, where free Starbucks coffee is served all day. The lobby does offer more style than some may expect from a mid-range chain, with silver metallic accents, vibrant purple chairs, and a long gas fireplace. Both tourists and business travelers can appreciate the hotel’s location, but the rooftop bar attracts locals as well, especially during the summer months when revelers can enjoy sweeping views of the Hudson outdoors.

Location

The hotel sits on a nondescript, gritty street, but it's close to Times Square.

The hotel is located in Midtown West, just a five-minute walk from Times Square, which is the main draw for many tourists looking to experience the bright lights of the city. Numerous theaters are also within walking distance, as are various subway lines, Port Authority Bus Terminal, and Bryant Park, where visitors can ice-skate in the winter and watch free movies during the warmer months. The street itself is gritty, though; there are adult DVD stores and a New York State parole office on the block (though there are also several other hotels).

Rooms

Contemporary but generic rooms with modern technology

Rooms at the Fairfield are contemporary, if generic, with large flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, free Wi-Fi, attractive wooden headboards, and plush bedding. Some are on the small side, and bathrooms are also small, and have little countertop space for toiletries. However, they do come equipped with makeup mirrors and hairdryers, and closets include laptop-sized safes. Most rooms are quiet for this area, especially those on higher floors; some have wonderful skyline views. Room renovations are planned for 2015.

Features

The small fitness center and free breakfast are typical for a mid-range property, but the rooftop bar is a nice, unexpected extra.

Like many mid-range hotels in the area, the Fairfield has several simple features. The on-site fitness center is small, with just a couple cardio machines (both have personal TVs) and free weights, and a computer terminal serves as a business center. The free breakfast is popular and a major draw for many; it includes coffee, pastries, juice, bagels, and yogurt, but the only hot items are heat-and-eat egg sandwiches. After breakfast service, the space converts into a sports bar serving snacks and burgers. While the above-mentioned features can be found at other mid-range hotels in the area, the Fairfield boasts a rooftop bar that’s a real highlight. Open throughout the year (there’s an indoor space), it features sweeping views of the Hudson that guests can enjoy while sipping cocktails and snacking on light bites.
