Oyster Review Summary

Photos and Review by Oyster.com Investigators

Pros

  • Modern boutique hotel with a stylish lobby
  • Great Midtown location close to tourist sites
  • Rooms and suites renovated in 2011
  • High thread-count sheets, flat-screen TVs, and iPod/iPad docks
  • Spacious bathrooms with backlit mirrors and slate tiling
  • Cool lounge with specialty cocktails, and a Mediterranean restaurant
  • Small but modern fitness center
  • Business center with 3 work stations and a flat-screen TV

Cons

  • No room service; no in-room coffeemakers
  • No pool or Jacuzzi
  • Standard rooms are pretty tight on space

Bottom Line

This mid-range Midtown hotel, formerly known as King & Grove, as well as LOLA and the Hotel Thirty Thirty -- boasts a hip and atmospheric lobby and lounge area, as well as 176 rooms and suites stylishly renovated in 2011. Sizes vary, and all units include modern amenities such as duvets, flat-screen TVs, iPod/iPad docks, sleek work desks, and slate bathrooms. The lobby is by far the place to be, with designer lighting installations, contemporary furniture, and black-and-white murals plus a small bar. The hotel offers the requisite business and fitness centers, and a cafe, but not much else in the way of features. It is, however, a suitable choice for those who want to plop down the bag, have a drink, and get out and see the city.

Oyster Hotel Review

 Scene

A hip, modern hotel better suited for a younger crowd

Lobby
Lobby

The entrance to the hotel changed in recent years from 30th Street to 29th Street. This can cause confusion for newcomers and taxi drivers. Signage can be hard to see, but tall doorways are telltale and lead to a dark and atmospheric lobby with murals and contemporary furniture. Circular sofas create the centerpiece of the room that sits below the piece de resistance -- an awe-inspiring chandelier from Tom Dixon. It’s a neat space to enjoy a cocktail, with lounge music playing in the background. In 2012, Zana Café opened off the lobby, serving up Mediterranean fare. This hotel will not appeal to traditional types who seek outstanding service and amenities. Instead, Martha Washington is better suited for young, hip types who are ready to hit the town running.
