Lowell Hotel

Scene

A quiet oasis with tasteful rooms and a renowned steakhouse

The Lowell draws well-heeled couples and families with large, beautiful rooms; top-notch services; and a central location on the southern edge of the Upper East Side. It is a small boutique, so it can’t compete with the amenities found at the neighborhood’s grand dames -- including The Plaza, The Pierre, The Four Seasons New York, and The Ritz-Carlton New York Central Park -- but the service quality and attention to detail is on par with that at larger top hotels.

The lobby features classic decor, with heavy drapes, a few upholstered chairs, and a couple of antiques, plus coffee, tea and small cookies throughout the day. It is small and somewhat dark, so guests generally don’t spend much time here. Off the lobby is the hotel restaurant: an American restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and pre-theater dinner in an elegant space.

Location

Central location in the Upper East Side; minutes from swank boutique shopping and a block from Central Park

Located on a tree-lined street dotted with brownstones, the Lowell is in one of the best parts of the Upper East Side -- just one block from Central Park, and a short walk from the many high-end designer boutiques along Madison Avenue.

Barney's and Vera Wang. Gossip Girl and The Jeffersons. Andrew Carnegie, Woody Allen, and Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl." Long synonymous with old money and pricey real estate, the Upper East Side remains home to what might be the greatest concentration of individual wealth in the country. There are basically three reasons to visit: shopping, museums, and Central Park. The shops that line Madison and Fifth avenues -- Valentino, Oscar de la Renta, Jimmy Choo, and on and on -- represent a veritable what's-what (and who's-who) of high-end fashion. The stretch of Fifth Avenue that runs north from the low 80s to 104th Street, known as "Museum Mile," is home to a number of world-renowned museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim. Finally, there's Central Park, which is a delightful place to walk, jog, bike, or sunbathe.
