Forty 1 North Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Newport, Rhode Island may be known as a summer hot spot for New England, but the lovely city on the water has plenty to do and see year-round. From sailing, to spas, to beach fun, Newport is full of great activities for visitors. As the "yachting capital of the world," Newport is the site of regattas and a vibrant yachting and sailing community. (Newport's nautical obsessions may have something to do with its significant role in the creation of the US Navy).

Many inns throughout the Rhode Island city have lovely garden areas, including the Yankee Peddler Inn, with rooftop garden seating. In a town like Newport, the New England charm is apparent around every corner. Visitors and locals alike find themselves kicking back with a good read in some all the cozy nooks that abound. Some of the higher-end luxury stays in Newport have parlor rooms, which make for gathering spots like the one at the Vanderbilt Grace. Several hotels in the area have great spas, like the one at the Newport Beach Hotel and Suites. For a "summer resort town," Newport has its share of lovely pools, both indoor and outdoor. The outdoor pool at the Hyatt Regency even boasts a lovely waterside view. New England B&Bs have some of the most charming porches in the world, and are the perfect places to unwind with a cup of tea. Newport has excellent public beaches: Easton's (the largest and most popular, featuring restrooms and a snack bar), Bailey's, Gooseberry, Sachuest, and Navy Beach. But if you're not up for a swim, just back and enjoy the calming New England waters, with boats dotting the waters and lighthouses scattered across the shore.
