Bottom Line

There's a lot to like about the 46-room Hotel Granada: The charming brick and stucco exterior, with balustrades and climbing flowers; the medieval-style common spaces; and the big lovely pool. The property is sprawling, with lots of event space and a restaurant in a room with stone walls and arches facing the lush outdoor landscaping. But the Standard Rooms are quite basic, hot water can be inconsistent, and construction on an extension to the hotel is still underway. tag:revisit 1/1/2014

Oyster Hotel Review

Hotel Granada

Location

Next to Guadalupe Church, within walking distance of Central Park and the lakefront

Hotel Granada is on the eastern end of Calle La Calzada, a popular thoroughfare lined with restaurants and bars. The hotel is a bit removed from the heart of the action, but still within walking distance of both Central Park and the lakefront.

Granada is one of Nicaragua's oldest cities, and it's full of Spanish Colonial charm -- expect historic churches, a large central plaza, and lively festivals throughout the year. It's also located right on the massive Lake Nicaragua, and visitors will find restaurants and bars along the waterfront as well as a pier where ferries depart to Ometepe, an island with two volcanic peaks. Nicaragua is still a poor country and it shows, but as tourism grows here, the city should see more development.

  • 5-minute walk to the restaurants and bars on Calle La Calzada
  • 5-minute walk to the Lake Nicaragua waterfront and pier (there's also a dirty beach)
  • 11-minute walk to Central Park
  • 15-minute walk to La Merced Church (the bell tower has panoramic views of the city)
  • 26-minute drive to Mombacho Volcano
