Bottom Line

The Aqua Pacific Monarch is a 34-story, condo-style hotel near the heart of Waikiki. Set on a busy avenue, it's not the best spot for a quiet stay, although the higher floors are insulated from most of the city noise. Rooms have a fairly generic look, with wall-to-wall carpeting, contemporary wood furniture, and tropical prints throughout. Some offer spectacular views of Waikiki from private balconies, and the panoramic vistas from the rooftop pool are even better. The property is two blocks from the beach and close to lots of shopping and dinning. For more stylish accommodations in the same reasonable price range, check next door at the VIVE Hotel Waikiki or at the Shoreline Hotel Waikiki, which also has a rooftop pool.

Oyster Hotel Review

Aqua Pacific Monarch

Scene

An airy and tropical (albeit slightly dated) feel, with floor-to-ceiling windows and natural stonework

Rattan fans hang from a partially wood-paneled ceiling in the lobby, where natural stonework is the star of the show. Floor-to-ceiling windows (common throughout the hotel) brighten the space, with a pair of huge wooden doors typically left open to the Hawaiian air. An old but somewhat charming fountain occupies one corner, with the sound of water trickling down a rock wall finishing off the traditional (albeit slightly dated) tropical feel.

Location

A short walk from Waikiki Beach on Kuhio Avenue

The Aqua Pacific Monarch is located on busy Kuhio Avenue and close to several other hotels. Situated just outside the heart of Waikiki, the property is around a five-minute walk from the beach. There are several restaurants nearby and the Honolulu Zoo is around a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Two blocks away is touristy Kalakaua Avenue, a busy stretch of shops, restaurants, and high-rise hotels that cuts across Waikiki. Diamond Head and Ala Wai golf courses are both less than a 15-minute drive (in opposite directions) from the hotel. Honolulu International Airport is a 20- to 25-minute cab ride away.

Rooms

Private balconies, kitchenettes, and contemporary (albeit generic) furnishings

Rooms have a somewhat uninspired look, with wall-to-wall carpeting, contemporary wood furnishings, and tropical-style floral prints throughout. All the standard rooms have full kitchens with full-size fridges and ovens. The studios have kitchenettes with mini-fridges, microwaves, and stovetop ranges. Many of the private balconies are spacious, with seating for four people. Some have views to the ocean, though they're partially obstructed by other buildings. The studio balconies are tiny, however, with only space enough to stand.

Features

A highly rated Japanese restaurant and a rooftop pool and sundeck with spectacular views

The rooftop houses a great sundeck with a small pool and a hot tub that have 360-degree views of Waikiki. There's also a sauna and a hospitality lounge equipped with showers. The hotel serves no breakfast, but the highly rated Jinroku Pacific Teppan Grill & Bar serves an authentic Japanese lunch and dinner. Potential guests should take note that there is a daily hospitality fee, which includes in-room coffee, use of in-room safe, and access to the hotel's Waikiki shuttle service.
