What It's Like

The 8th Arrondissement is best known for the Champs-Elysees, the most famous boulevard in Paris. Its sidewalks are lined by trees, shops, and restaurants, and most notably, high-end fashion boutiques. On one end stands the Arc de Triomphe, from which visitors can see sweeping views of the city, and on the other stands the Grand Palais, a beautifully restored historic building that now houses an impressive art collection. The Champs-Elysees is one of the three streets that form the "Golden Triangle" shopping district -- the other two being Avenue Montaigne and Avenue George V -- and it's here that shoppers will find the stores of name-brand designers such as Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, and Chanel. Some of Some complain that the Champs-Elysees has lost some of its charm with the influx of chain stores and restaurants, but at least the McDonald's offers beautiful views of the street!

Aside from the Champs-Elysees area, the Parc Monceau, and a few minor museums, the 8th Arrondissement has less to offer tourists than some other neighborhoods in the city. The larger part of the neighborhood is a commercial and business area, with few tourists and even few Parisians past dark.

Most hotels in the 8th Arrondissement are located within walking distance of the Champs-Elysees. There are numerous luxury hotels as well as several mid-range hotels in the area. Those in Paris on business may consider staying closer to the heart of the neighborhood.
