Bottom Line

Park Plaza Resort is an upper-middle-range property that compares favorably with the competition by offering large suites with kitchens, and a convenient location near Main Street and the ski resorts. Many of the 63 suites at this pet-friendly resort have fireplaces and balconies, while the on-site features and friendly staff make this a great choice for families on ski breaks. In addition to ski storage and shuttle service around town, the property has an indoor pool and hot tub, and special daily events, such as breakfast, wine and cheese, or margaritas. The price includes a resort fee, however, and there's no restaurant on-site.

Park Plaza Resort

Scene

Cozy and family-friendly with a boutique feel, rather than an impersonal resort

Situated in a three-story, red-brick building, the Park Plaza is rather unassuming as a resort hotel. The lobby is cozy and small, with just a couple of rustic, leather couches and a table with water and coffee available throughout the day. The hotel employs an open-flow concept with seating clusters -- including brown leather armchairs arranged around a fire place and wooden bookshelves -- scattered among each floor. All suites face the interior, with the sunny pool and hot tub area occupying much of the ground floor space, and red-brick and warm brown walls throughout. Decor is generally brown and beige, with carpeting or tile floors, framed paintings of Park City landscapes, southwestern sculpture and tchotchkes, and some potted plants. The hotel is pet-friendly and geared toward tourists and families, as evidenced by the presence of a game room with a small theater and video games.

Location

In a quiet Park City location, a quick drive from Main Street and ski slopes

The hotel sits in a mixed-business district in Park City, and is surrounded by a strip mall and other hotels. It’s a relatively quiet area, but sees regular traffic and is well-lit at night. It's possible to walk to restaurants and some shopping, though the action on Main Street -- including an array of cafes, bars, shops, and galleries -- is about five minutes' drive. A few ski resorts -- including Park City, Canyons, and Deer Valley -- are within 10 minutes' drive. Interstate 80 is about a 10-minute drive, and with no traffic, the drive to Salt Lake City Airport is about 40 minutes.

Rooms

Spacious and modern with kitchens, and many with fireplaces

Every room at this Park Plaza is designed to be self-contained and equipped for dining. Even the smallest rooms -- the Studios -- have small dining tables, and kitchenettes with microwaves, mini-fridges, two-burner stovetops, coffeemakers, and even toasters and blenders, plus dishes, pots, pans, and utensils. Some have balconies, and each also has a small couch and flat-screen TV. Decor is classic, if somewhat generic, with beige carpeting and walls, wood furniture and bed frames, and some colorful armchairs and paintings. Bathrooms feel fresh and modern, with exterior granite and wood sink areas, and shower/tub combos with striped curtains. The resort also offers mini, one-, and two-bedroom Condo Suites with more space, full-size kitchens, gas fireplaces with stonework, and balconies. Guests note that noise can be heard in ground-level rooms, storage space is lacking in some rooms, and that housekeeping can be infrequent.
