Bottom Line

The upscale Be Live Collection Palace de Muro is a high-end chain hotel partly built in the form of a Greek temple overlooking the particularly pretty stretch of sand of Playa de Muro. An impressive collection of modern art certainly adds a distinguished flavor to the place, backed up by top-notch facilities such as a decent spa and quality dining. Guests sip chilled Cava reclining on Bali beds overlooking the C-shaped pool, which also offers a poolside bar and whirlpool tub terrace. While some of the 184 rooms lack a lavish finish and bathrooms feel dated, upgrades and suites feature a few luxe perks and some superb sea views. Inevitably its one of the pricier options in the area, but if you're going high-end the nearby Hotel Playa Esperanza is also worth considering with bigger gardens and more pools.

Be Live Collection Palace de Muro

Scene

High-end hotel with Greek-style architecture, art collection, and classy vibe

Being tucked away out of view from the road makes the majestic neo-classical entrance to the Palace de Muro hotel all the more impressive. Soaring columns support a branded pediment in the style of a Greek temple, while behind them floor-to-ceiling glass panels flood the lobby with sunlight. A signature scent with notes of cinnamon adds to the already high-end vibe of the reception area, where brown leather Chesterfield sofas sit along side contemporary sculpture and a monthly rotating exhibition of art. The welcome drink is a choice of fresh coffee or a glass of chilled Cava. Striking staircases spiral symmetrically up to higher levels either side of the space, and to the rear another wall of glass overlooks the gardens and sea beyond. Now part of the Spanish Be Live chain, this hotel was built at the start of the millennium with the ancient classical theme continuing in various forms through the property's two buildings. While it doesn't offer a great deal in the way of gardens, sunny terraces dotted with palm trees and colorful flowers surround the semicircular swimming pool, with direct access to the pretty beach. This upscale hotel attracts mostly well-heeled couples though also some families, with German the most common language among guests.

Location

Quiet beachfront setting just a few minutes walk to Alcudia Nature Reserve

This property is part of a leafy low-key neighborhood of summer homes and a few other hotels, sandwiched between the beautiful Playa de Muro beach and the main road that runs parallel with Alcudia Bay. There's not much in the immediate surrounds in the way of dining or nightlife, though a pleasant beachfront restaurant Coco Beach is a two-minute walk away. In addition to offering direct access to a scenic stretch of sand, this Be Live is a short three-minute walk from the Alcudia Nature Reserve -- protected wetlands perfect for bird-watching. Lively Port d'Alcudia is a 10-minute drive to the north, while in the other direction is the more laid back Can Picafort (it's also about 20 minutes by bus to either). The pretty Alcudia old town and nearby Roman ruins of Pollentia are also a 15-minute drive away. Situated at the opposite end of the island, however, the capital of Palma and its Palma de Mallorca Airport are up to an hour by road.

Rooms

Spacious and updated rooms many with superb sea-view balconies

There are a total of 184 guest rooms and suites, all updated in 2014, with most finished in an understated combination of simple modern furniture, mottled-tiled floors, and blue-on-white color schemes. Some suites also have original artworks, wood-veneer flooring, and brighter splashes of color. While bright, clean, and contemporary, some rooms lack the finish of their advertised luxury status. All rooms open to balconies or terraces with quality rattan seating and views ranging from the quiet street to full frontal sea panoramas. Starting at around 375 square feet (35 square meters) rooms are on the spacious side, with suites doubling that and featuring long terraces that run the length of the room.

Amenities include 43-inch flat-screen TVs as standard, plus well-stocked minibars and electronic safes (for a fee); in-room Wi-Fi is free though often slow. Higher-category perks include espresso machines and Bluetooth/USB speaker towers, while suites add use of traditional Majorcan beach baskets (available for purchase), walk-in dressing rooms, and second TVs in lounges. Top-end suites also have better quality minibar items, reservable poolside Bali beds, and free access to the VIP lounge.

Not all bathrooms have been renovated and feel dated in comparison, though they're roomy with twin basins and shower/tub combos. They're also kitted out with terry towel robes, individual toiletries, and wall-mounted hairdryers; a heater bulb also takes the edge off in cooler months.

Extensive spa open to all guests, plus pool with Bali beds and a kids' club

As you might expect for a hotel of this caliber, there's no shortage of leisure and relaxation facilities. The Grecian theme certainly takes off in the spa, an atmospheric, low-lit space that offers a thermal pool with swan-neck jets, whirlpool tub, two saunas, steam room, ice machine, heated beds, and six treatment rooms for massage; entry is free of charge. There's also a huge gym with two personal trainers on hand. The main C-shaped swimming pool is lined with comfy loungers and Bali beds, which are available for a fee and include Cava and fruit. New for 2017 is a terrace with extra beds and whirlpool tub. Children have their own pool, plus a free kids' club runs twice a day for four to 12-year olds.

Served in their smart and spacious dining room, breakfast is a vast buffet of hot and cold items, plus chilled Cava, cooked-to-order eggs and waffles, and their own pastries. Breakfast is always included in rates, and there's an optional half-board plan covering dinner. Mediterranean-themed a la carte dining is available at the Mare restaurant for dinner, which opens to an alfresco terrace. Lunch and snacks are provided at the poolside bar, which also specializes in Iberian ham and other tapas. An exclusive VIP room (open to top-level suite guests) offers free drinks and tapas throughout the day with waiter service.

An extensive animation program covers the usual fitness classes, as well as food- and wine-focused tastings and demonstrations. Cyclists have use of secure bike storage, service, and hire, plus free packed lunches and energy drinks. Wi-Fi throughout the property is free.
