It's no accident that Portland's most popular attractions are nature-oriented, from the zen Portland Japanese Garden to numerous hiking paths (such as Oneonto Gorge, just 15 minutes east of the city in Mt. Hood National Forest). Portland's classy side takes over at the Hotel Vintage Plaza, home to a well-curated on-site wine cellar. With a distinguished cultural scene, Portland has some great reads around every corner. Even some hotels, like the Westin Portland, have on-site libraries for brushing up on your Allen Ginsberg or William S. Burroughs. Arguably one of the U.S.'s most environmentally-friendly cities, PDX has a reliable and user-friendly public transportation system. And an added bonus is the bike-friendly culture, with free rentals for visitors who stay at the Hotel Monaco. Portland is one of the best of the best when it comes to beer and coffee. Widmer Brewing Company on Mississippi Avenue offers daily tours (with free goodies, like samples and a pint glass souvenir!), and excellent coffee, like the blends at Stumptown Cafe at the Ace Hotel. For less outdoorsy types (or for those infamous rainy days), Portland also offers more typically urban highlights, including some great shops and boutiques. Portland is a foodie's paradise, with delectable dining options for all diets, so vegans and vegetarians need not worry! Many restaurants also have a focus on sustainable, organic, and local ingredients.
