The 589 rooms at the Conrad San Juan Condado Plaza are inviting and bright, decorated in blues and greens or brilliant reds, and featuring plenty of space. The drawbacks are that the bathrooms are tight and views fluctuate drastically: Some are breathtaking vistas of pristine ocean, others are of nothing more than abandoned hotels and decrepit buildings. There are two decent pools, but the property's small beach fronts a lagoon-like inlet rather than the open ocean. If you're looking for waves, head to Isla Verde (or the hip pool scene at the nearby La Concha) instead.

The hotel is located on the tip of a peninsula in Condado, surrounded by very little besides abandoned hotels: be prepared to cab if you are heading out to dinner. You will have to take the bus to the main tourist attractions in Old San Juan, but it offers easy access to the airport.
Once a booming area catering to foreign tourism, and then forgotten and somewhat sketchy, Condado became an affluent beachfront neighborhood after the remarkable rehabilitation carried out in the late 90s and early 2000s. Avenida Ashford is the main strip, where restaurants, upscale boutiques and casinos line the sidewalks.
