Fajardo is a small town on the northeastern coast of Puerto Rico, about a one-hour drive from San Juan. There's not much to see in the town itself -- in fact, areas of it feel pretty run-down -- but it's a jumping off point for some of the country's best natural attractions. Ferries leave regularly from Fajardo to the islands of Culebra and Vieques, both home to beautiful, relatively untouched white-sand beaches; and the town is home to its own excellent beaches, including Seven Seas Beach. Clear waters make the snorkeling and diving in this area excellent, and the town has earned a reputation as a center for recreational boating. El Yunque National Forest, a lush, mountainous rainforest with excellent hiking and beautiful waterfalls, is about a 30-minute drive away.
If you're planning multiple day trips to Culebra and Vieques, consider staying in the downtown area, near the ferry terminal. For easy ferry access to the beaches and water sports on the 100-acre Palomino Island, stay at one of the two luxury Waldorf Astoria resorts on the peninsula north of downtown.
