Open bathrooms aren't family-friendly
Situated on the small island of Vieques, this hotel has the modern, funky feel of the W brand with a tropical twist -- it's right on it's own private beach, the lobby and rooms feature bright colors and concrete floors, and the infinity pool overlooking the ocean has a pool bar serving up poolside drinks and meals. A couples-friendly hotel, the W has a nice spa and rooms with sexy open bathrooms. "Free" perks such as an airport lounge and in-room Wi-Fi seem great -- until you get your bill laden with hefty daily resort fees.
Vieques is a small, 20-mile-long island about eight miles from the mainland of Puerto Rico, with beautiful white-sand beaches and a bioluminescent bay. It may be best known for the protests that took place on the island, leading to the removal of the US Navy bombing range and testing grounds in 2003, but nowadays tourists are drawn to it's relatively untouched beaches and few luxury hotels. Though the island is far less built-up than mainland Puerto Rico, locals fear that soon enough it will become a popular tourist destination, bringing in high-rise hotels and swarms of people.
Vieques is surrounded by beaches and bays, and the famous Mosquito Bay is bioluminescent. The island is also home to a historic fort and lighthouse, wild horses, and delicious fruits like papaya, bananas, and avocado.
