Puerto Aventuras is a small resort community in between Playa Del Carmen and Tulum (both are about a 35-minute drive away). Puerto Aventuras is often ranked as one of the most family-friendly locations in Mexico -- the waters are calm and there are fewer crowds because the area does not cater to rowdy partiers. Visitors here come for the large marina, golf course, and of course, the white-sand beaches where activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, swimming with the dolphins, and fishing are all popular pastimes. In addition to families, plenty of couples looking for a relaxing location come to the area, as there are several adults-only resorts. The town is centered around the marina, with a few shops and restaurants.
The snorkeling and scuba diving here are particularly renowned. One of the largest barrier reefs in the world is just off the coast, and both novice and experienced divers can explore the waters -- although only experienced divers should check out the underwater caverns. For more mellow areas to swim and snorkel, Puerto Aventuras has three bays with safe, shallow waters.
Most hotels in Puerto Aventuras are on the water, but some are on calm bays (such as Fatima Bay) while others have lagoons but no direct beach access. While the majority of the hotels in Puerto Aventuras are luxurious (and thus expensive) there are a range of options: Some are all-inclusive and some are adults-only. Those looking to be close to the (minimal) action may consider staying near the marina.
