What It's Like

Centered around the Termini Station, the city's main transportation hub, Repubblica is a bustling, traffic-filled area and oftentimes not the "Rome" that people expect upon arriving. Yet though this area isn't as picturesque as some others, it has slowly been improving over the last couple of decades, and is home to some of its own special attractions.

Repubblica was known as the "new Rome" of the 19th century, but it is also home to several centuries-old structures, such as the ruins of the Baths of Diocletian (ancient public baths dating back to 298 AD), the adjacent Bascilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, and the Michelangelo-designed Santa Maria degli Angeli. Repubblica also attracts visitors with the Opera House and the National Gallery.

Where To Stay

Repubblica is a good spot to find budget hotel options; there are a few luxury hotels scattered throughout the area but most are past their prime. Don't be discouraged if you've found a budget hotel and the entrance looks drab; many of these hotels are actually quaint inside despite their exteriors. Though Repubblica is gentrified for the most part, visitors may want to avoid staying near Via Giolitti which is still slightly more drab and dangerous than other parts of Repubblica.
