Hotel Dei Consoli

The Hotel Dei Consoli is located in a peachy, wedge-shaped, corner building that dates to the 19th century, which it shares with some small shops that are on the street level. Inside, the family-owned hotel has a pretty, classic feel with heavy wooden furnishings, painted glass windows, and large paintings. The lobby has a small, curved bar with a big espresso machine in a lovely space with a small, vaulted ceiling. Breakfast is served on the roof terrace offering panoramic views and colorful tables painted by ceramics artists of Deruta in Umbria. Just outside, olive, orange, and mandarin trees as well as flowers decorate the surrounding space and provide a beautiful spot for guests to enjoy their breakfast alfresco or have an evening cocktail. Most guests are couples, as the setting here is decidedly romantic, though a smaller number of families and business travelers also come through the hotel.

The hotel is located in the Prati neighborhood Rome with pizza shops, gelaterias, shops, and cafes within a few minutes' walk. It's known as a shopping hub in the city, with many designer stores in the surrounds, and the Ottaviano metro station is a five-minute walk. It’s a 10-minute walk to the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica, with the stunning entrance to Vatican City about 10 more minutes beyond. The Castel Sant'Angelo is a 10-minute walk, and the Piazza Navona can be reached in under 20 minutes on foot. Most other popular sights are a bit far to walk to; it’s around a 15-minute drive to the Colosseum or Trevi Fountain. Ciampino Airport and Leonardo da Vinci Airport are both around a half-hour drive from the hotel.

Rooms at Hotel Dei Consoli are classically decorated and formal with subtly patterned wallpaper and floral carpeting, along with elegant decor touches like decorative crown molding, hard-wood furnishings, silk bedding, and floor-length drapes. Some rooms have odd angles, and the Standard Rooms are on the small side. All rooms have minibars, TVs with satellite channels, and free Wi-Fi. The Standard bathroom we saw only had a small, stand-up shower, but bathrobes, slippers, and generous amenity kits are provided -- including toothbrushes. Deluxe Rooms have hydromassage tubs, and the two Junior Suites have hydromassage whirlpool tubs. 

Breakfast is included in room rates and comes with the standard fare for the area: pastries, cold cuts, and cheese, with the addition of bacon and eggs. Breakfast is included in room rates for the Dependance, the annex hotel, but guests must walk over to Hotel Dei Consoli for it. The hotel has a small lobby bar and a beautiful rooftop terrace. Small pets are allowed at the annex hotel. Honeymoon packages are available complete with roses, champagne, and strawberries -- but only with certificate of marriage.
