Bottom Line

The 73-room Peery Hotel is a historic downtown charmer with few extras, but a solid pick for the location and price. The biggest draw is the inexpensive rate for an upper-middle-range hotel close to sights and entertainment in Salt Lake City. There are a good on-site restaurant, free coffee in the lobby, and a gym, plus free Wi-Fi everywhere. Rooms are contemporary and have lovely bathrooms, Tempur-Pedic mattresses, and coffeemakers, but they lack mini-fridges. Those looking for something more family-friendly can check out Crystal Inn Hotel and Suites, which offers with more in-room conveniences and an indoor pool.

Peery Hotel

Scene

Charming hotel with a historic feel, offering good value in a convenient location

Built in 1910, The Peery Hotel has maintained a historic feel through updates over the years -- the most recent of which occurred in 2016. Elements of the hotel’s past influences have been incorporated into the modern design for an overall appealing and warm atmosphere. In the lobby, peach walls and wood furniture are offset with black trim and deep-blue accents, while vintage-style furnishing and artwork is a nod to the history of the building -- think collections of gears and antique keys, and paintings reflecting artistic styles over the past hundred-plus years. Pendant globe lights create a warm glow, along with a cage-like chandelier with an industrial feel. Though lacking an upscale polish, the hotel has a charm that draws couples and business travelers in downtown Salt Lake City, and makes it a good value.

Contemporary rooms with handsome furnishings, coffeemakers, and comfy mattresses

All rooms were renovated in 2016, outfitted in a contemporary, handsome design in neutral tones. Design elements include tufted leather headboards, geometric-print carpeting in gold and black, houndstooth pillows, studded wooden furniture, and black crown molding. On the downside, many rooms are on the small side and some have odd configurations that put sinks outside the bathrooms or toilets squeezed between the tubs and sinks. Still, Tempur-Pedic mattreses are comfy, and all rooms have wardrobes, desks, coffeemakers, and flat-screen TVs, but no mini-fridges, and iPod docks must be request. Fresh white-and-black bathrooms are bright, modern, and outfitted with shower/tub combos. Some higher-category rooms add sitting areas with sofa bed and whirlpool tubs.
