This cylindrical, 220-room hotel became a Sheraton in May 2012 and received several upgrades as a result. A full-scale renovation of the property is planned to begin in fall 2012 and be completed by early 2013. This will include a larger lobby area and restaurant, as well as new hallways. Most amenities in the rooms themselves (mattresses, linens, etc) were changed as part of the transition as well. A few blocks north of the San Diego Concourse, the hotel is located right before a freeway on-ramp, conveniently close to the airport and major attractions. It still has some great freebies — free Wi-Fi, free morning newspaper, and a free shuttle to take you to the airport, for example. But the small pool and fitness center and out-of-the-way location near the highway are downsides.

The Holiday Inn Downtown is conveniently located off of highway I-5, making for easy access from the airport and to many of the city’s attractions. While not much is in walking distance, you can walk to the San Diego Concourse or to nearby Little Italy. The free shuttle will take you to Sea World and the San Diego Zoo in 10 minutes, it's a five-minute drive to the coffee shops, restaurants, boutiques, and galleries of the Gaslamp Quarter.
Contemporary decor and flat-screen TVs
The hotel completed a $7 million renovation in 2008, and its rooms are up-to-date, with 32-inch flat screen TVs and contemporary (if generic) decor. In 2012, when the hotel was purchased by Sheraton, most of the in-room amenities (such as mattresses and linens) were replaced. The hotel plans to renovate public spaces further beginning in fall 2012.

Great freebies: Free Wi-Fi, free morning newspaper delivery, and a free shuttle to the airport and nearby attractions
The highlight of the Holiday Inn is the free shuttle, which takes guests to and from the San Diego Airport as well as to any attraction within a three-mile radius.
