Bottom Line

The 223-room Westgate Hotel offers plenty old-world European luxury -- common spaces feature high ceilings with crown molding and large chandeliers, wide, carpeted staircases, and elegant curtains draping the floor-to-ceiling windows. Rooms are extremely spacious and clean, and offer either harbor or city views, though the decor is classic, perhaps to a fault; this hotel may not be the best pick for visitors with modern tastes. The hotel is undeniably luxurious, with a modern fitness center, spa, old-school barber shop, and on-site flower boutique, as well as a rooftop pool, added after our visit. However, the "facility fee" can be a major pain on top of the pricey parking fees.

Oyster Hotel Review

The Westgate Hotel

Scene

Refined elegance

This upscale San Diego property attracts both well-heeled tourists and business travelers who appreciate the quiet, refined vibe and the convenient location just outside the Gaslamp Quarter. Families with young children are welcome, but the overall look is classic, bordering on stuffy to some. From the lobby replete with massive chandeliers to the well-regarded restaurant paneled walls and richly-colored furniture, the style here is old-world charm.

Location

Just outside of the Gaslamp Quarter, and a short walk from various restaurants, bars, and attractions

The hotel is just outside of the Gaslamp Quarter and steps away from various parks, restaurants, and other San Diego attractions. Just around the corner is the Balboa Theatre, as well as the Hall of Justice. The light rail stops at the Civic Center Station, just in front of the hotel, which takes riders all the way from Tijuana to north of the airport, which is conveniently close to the hotel.

The historical Gaslamp Quarter, located between 4th and 6th avenues, and between Broadway to the north and Harbor Drive to the south, is a hip, young neighborhood that's home to some of downtown San Diego's best restaurants, shopping, nightlife, boutiques, and art galleries. It's also where some of the city's most popular outdoor celebrations -- Mardi Gras, St. Patrick's Day, and the Street Scene music festival -- take place.

  • 10-minute drive to the San Diego International Airport
  • 1- to 5-minute walk to various dining and shopping options
  • 2-minute walk to Horton Plaza, which has tons of shopping and dining options
  • 5-minute drive to The San Diego Convention Center
  • 5-minute drive to Seaport Village
  • 6-minute drive to the Maritime Museum of San Diego
  • 6-minute drive to Petco Park, home to the San Diego Padres
  • 8-minute drive to Balboa Park
  • 8-minute drive to the San Diego Zoo
  • 9-minute drive to Old Town
  • 12-minute drive to Sea World

Rooms

Elegantly styled rooms are spacious and updated with helpful technology.

Even standard rooms here are quite massive, and come complete with large flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and Wi-Fi (which is "free" since it's covered in the facility fee). But after that, the modern look stops. Rooms are fresh and nothing is worn, but the look is old-world charm: Picture plush, floral comforters, gilded work desks, needlepoint settees, and large marble vanities.

Features

An average gym, beloved restaurant, rooftop pool, and numerous meeting spaces

The hotel boasts a plethora of meeting spaces as well as several beloved dining options that include afternoon tea and a Sunday brunch buffet which has received many awards over the years. The gym is okay; it's spacious enough, but lacks many machines. A rooftop pool was added after our visit, and this space includes a running track and outdoor fitness studios with cardio equipment.
