Bottom Line

The Westin Gaslamp Quarter is an upscale, 450-room hotel set in the San Diego's bustling Gaslamp Quarter. The rooms in this modern property provide a particularly calming environment and some even offer partial views of San Diego bay. However, fees for the breakfast buffet and parking can leave guests feeling nickel-and-dimed. It may be worth comparing rates with the nearby and more stylish Palomar or Andaz hotels.

The Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter

Scene

Enormous property with modern but corporate decor

First opened in 1987, The Westin Gaslamp Quarter underwent a $25 million property-wide renovation across all 16 of its floors and was relaunched in 2012. Its once garish multi-colored facade and sweeping archway entrance were redone with pristine neutral tones, contemporary sculpture, and a sleek 21st-century steel portico. The lobby is an open and airy space finished in sleek natural woods with tasteful design furnishings, vertical garden walls, and wide-screen iMacs. While the ambience is fresh, stylish, and modern, the vibe doesn't try to be overly hip or edgy, which helps the property draw in vacationers and business travelers in equal measure.

Rooms

Particularly calming rooms with neutral tones and natural wood

The Westin has 450 rooms, all of which benefitted from the hotel's 2012 makeover. All units are simply styled in natural wood with calming neutral tones and stone accents. Amenities include mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, and coffeemakers. Wi-Fi is included in the Destination Amenity Fee (for all guests). While rooms advertise bay or cityscape views, only a few of the higher-level rooms offer a peep of the Pacific, and most just look out on office buildings. Bathrooms have rainfall showers and are finished with stone tiling. All come with hairdryers and robes.
