Shutters On The Beach

Shutters On The Beach Rating: 5.0 Pearls

A known celebrity hangout, Shutters on the Beach has an atmosphere of formal opulence, with expensive artwork in its lobby and restaurants, luxe features, and rooms that belong in a billionaire's beach house. Its oceanfront location and doting service are hard to beat, but Casa Del Mar rivals it with a more intimate feel and better amenities.

Hotel Casa Del Mar

Hotel Casa Del Mar Rating: 4.5 Pearls

A true jewel, this historic grand hotel is world-class yet refreshingly unpretentious (unless you count the Hollywood crowd at the popular lobby bar). But there is nothing modest about its spacious elegant rooms, rooftop pool, and commanding location right on the beach -- a rarity in L.A. It's one of the best luxury hotels in town.

The Westin Los Angeles Airport

The Westin Los Angeles Airport Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A chain hotel near LAX Airport and the 405 freeway, The Westin Los Angeles Airport is a 740-room giant with extra amenities like New Balance workout gear for rent and in-room spa treatments. There are three on-site dining options including the Daily Grill for a sit-down meal or lobby cafe for takeaway snacks and beverages. Rooms are generic, but do have signature comfortable beds and flat-screen TVs. There is an outdoor pool and hot tub, free shuttle to LAX airport, and Zipcar service available on-site but there is a fee for Wi-Fi. Guests looking for a more upscale pool experience should check out the nearby Custom Hotel with a multi tiered pool deck and fire pit.

The Huntley Hotel Santa Monica Beach

The Huntley Hotel Santa Monica Beach Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A design-conscious, thoroughly un-beachy 18-floor hotel in the center of a beachside community with an exceptional restaurant -- but, disappointingly, no pool -- that attracts a mix of European hipsters, wedding parties, and business travelers. It's good for those who prefer strolling and shopping to sunning and swimming, but scuffed-up rooms belie the four-year, $18-million renovation (completed in 2009).

Le Merigot-A JW Marriott Beach Hotel And Spa Santa Monica

Le Merigot-A JW Marriott Beach Hotel And Spa Santa Monica Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 175-room hotel, located five-minutes from the beach in Santa Monica, has comfortable beds but generic-looking decor and unremarkable amenities. There's nothing really wrong with it, but for similar prices you can often get more personality and better features at other Santa Monica hotels like the Loews.

Hotel Shangri La Santa Monica

Hotel Shangri La Santa Monica Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A slick and inviting boutique hotel overlooking the Pacific, with 71 exquisite rooms and lustrous interiors in an iconic Art Deco building that displays the curvy contours of an elegant ocean liner. For a modish and luxurious ocean-side getaway, the Shangri-La is mighty close to perfection.

Shore Hotel

Shore Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This chic, 164-room beach hotel opened in 2011 with a prime location across from the Santa Monica Pier and a block away from shopping and entertainment on Third Street Promenade. The building has a sleek, eco-friendly design, and comfortable rooms feature private balconies; city or ocean views; and modern technologies such as free Wi-Fi and self-adjusting thermostats. The lovely courtyard pool area and well-equipped fitness center are also pluses, as is the locally sourced Mexican restaurant.

Beach House at Hermosa Beach

Beach House at Hermosa Beach Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Beach House is a 96-room, upscale hotel that overlooks Hermosa Beach. It's located on The Strand, a 26-mile pathway that runs parallel to the ocean, within walking distance of waterfront cafes, nightlife hot spots, and local surf shops. Frequent guests say that area can get overcrowded in tourist season, creating noise and limiting privacy for those staying on the hotel’s first floor. The best rooms (on the second and third floors) have ocean views and cost extra.

Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel

Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Its family-oriented, ocean-view pool and excellent gym make the 342-room Loews in Santa Monica a reasonable option for business travelers and families. Just note that the constant nickel-and-diming and overpriced food can add up, and that the hotel isn't right on the beach (it's across the street from it).

Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows

Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Luxurious (though small) rooms, an excellent spa, and a devoted staff make this five-acre, 302-room property one of the best hotels in Santa Monica. The Fairmont is not as intimate as the Oceana, and it lacks the direct beachfront of Casa Del Mar. But with beautiful grounds and a laid-back, private vibe, it's an excellent choice nonetheless.
