Sheen Falls Lodge

Sheen Falls Lodge Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Sheen Falls Lodge is arguably the top hotel in County Kerry. The 300-acre estate belonged to the Marquess of Landsowne in the 18th century, and the hotel -- opened in 1991 -- feels like a country manor house. It has a stunning setting on both Kenmare Bay and Sheen River, which has, as the name suggests, gentle tumbling waterfalls. The 66 rooms have classic country decor -- crown molding, cheerful prints (plaids and florals among them, in moderation), and soft yellow walls; all but one have water views. Estate activities range from clay pigeon shooting to fishing to tennis, and more traditional luxury hotel features include a lovely indoor pool, spa, and small fitness center. Formal fine dining is offered at La Cascade restaurant, while (slightly) less expensive dishes are served at the classy Restaurant Lounge. The sommelier hosts daily tastings in the wine cellar.
Dromhall Hotel

Dromhall Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 72-room Dromhall Hotel is a family-owned upscale property within walking distance to Killarney’s town center. The elegant, bright interiors are traditionally decorated with antique furnishings, damask wallpapers, and patterned armchairs and sofas; inviting common spaces include a lovely lounge with a fireplace and selection of books. Guests also have access to a leisure center located in an adjacent property with an indoor pool, sauna, steam room, and full-service spa. There are two restaurants on-site: a relaxed bar and bistro and a more refined dining room, both serving local, seasonal menus. Rooms have marble bathrooms, and many have mountain views. For the price, though, it may also be worth considering Sheen Falls Lodge, a 300-acre estate with more activities.
Brook Lane Hotel

Brook Lane Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 21-room Brook Lane Hotel is an upper-middle-range boutique property located on the edges of the charming town of Kenmare. Elegant, contemporary interiors are clad in neutral tones complemented by vibrant maroon colors and patterned wallpaper accent walls. There are lots of comfortable couches and armchairs in various common areas, including a small library, and tasty seasonal and local food is served in the hotel’s Casey’s Bar and Restaurant. Stylish, homey rooms feature country charm, flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and safes, but lack minibars, mini-fridges, or coffee and tea-making facilities. The nearby Kenmare Bay Hotel and Resort, though not as stylish, has a pool, sauna, steam room, and fitness room, all at much cheaper rates.
Loch Lein Country House

Loch Lein Country House Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The mid-range Loch Lein Country House is a family-owned rural retreat in the Killarney Lake District with lovely grassy grounds that overlook farmland, the lake, and MacGillicuddy Reeks mountain range. Interiors and pleasant and homey, with traditional decor that looks a bit dated, but overall the spaces are clean and cozy. There are 25 spacious rooms, many with lovely views of the lakes and mountains and large bathrooms with separate tubs and walk-in showers, but amenities are limited to old tube TVs and safes. A full Irish breakfast is included in the room rate and served in the panoramic dining room, where tasty dinners are available with locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. The nearby Europe Hotel & Resort is more stylish and includes a spa and several dining options, but its rates are steeper.
