Omni Houston Hotel

Omni Houston Hotel Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The 378-room Omni Houston Hotel is big on both style and substance. Well-appointed, modern, and comfortable, the hotel sits in a lovely residential area just outside Memorial Park. The huge, white exterior may be a bit commanding and cold, but inside the hotel attempts to sooth with a Zen-like lobby with calming water features and delicate white orchids. Beautiful, updated guest rooms have flat-screen TVs and alarm clocks with MP3 hookups, while damask-printed accents provide a sophisticated touch. In the bathrooms, oversize mirrors and wallpaper add a designer look. Perks of the property include two geometric pools with a bar and private cabanas, two restaurants (one for dinner, one for all three meals) and a bar, a spacious fitness center, and a full-service spa. Kids have something to enjoy too -- fun-filled backpacks upon check in, as well as free milk and cookies during their first night's stay. On the downside, both valet and self-parking cost extra, and the hotel is far from the city's major attractions.
Royal Sonesta Hotel Houston

Royal Sonesta Hotel Houston Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 485-room, business-oriented chain hotel is located off the busy West Loop freeway, within walking distance to shops and restaurants. The big lobby has comfy seating areas, and a large curving staircase stationed next to a baby grand piano adds wow factor. The classic, chain-like rooms have big, comfortable beds with crisp bedding and fluffy pillows, and leather arm chairs. Suites feature small kitchenettes, while all rooms have flat-screen TVs and minibars. The bathrooms are simple and clean and feature high-end Gilchrist & Soames toiletries. The Royal Sonesta has no on-site spa, but the concierge can arrange in-room massage services. Amenities include a modern fitness center, a classy restaurant and bar, and an outdoor pool in a sunny courtyard.
Magnolia Hotel Houston

Magnolia Hotel Houston Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 314-room downtown hotel is housed in a 1926 building that was the original corporate headquarters of Shell Oil Company. But it's not all about historic appeal here -- guests are greeted by the fantastic modern lobby, which features high ceilings, curved suede sofas, soft lighting, and a cool fireplace. Each room is outfitted with premium bedding, thick velvet drapes and flat-screen TVs. Gorgeous bathrooms feature marble and granite, and each has a separate walk-in shower and big soaking tub. There's no spa, but guests can access the 24-hour fitness center or hit up Houston's only rooftop pool and Jacuzzi for some sun and relaxation. The hotel also offers some great perks, including free shoe shines, free daily breakfast, and an evening reception with assorted beers and wines. Bedtime milk and cookies are also served -- a cute and comforting touch.
Omni Houston Hotel at Westside

Omni Houston Hotel at Westside Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 400-room Omni Houston Hotel at Westside is an upscale business chain located in a suburban area near Memorial City Mall. This older property completed a multimillion-dollar renovation, and the stunning lobby now features a large koi pond where tall, slender trees extend from small circular islands. Other additions include a makeover for Black Gold Bar, a down-home place accented with animal skulls and dark wood. Rooms have contemporary, but bland, decor, and flat-screen TVs. The bathrooms are clean but generic, and shower/tub combos have dated pink tile. The fitness center is big and modern, and the outdoor pool is huge compared to those at comparable properties closer to downtown. The hotel has several meeting rooms for business travelers, but free Wi-Fi is only available to Omni Hotel members (it's free to join). The location is far from Downtown Houston, so it's best suited for those doing business in the area.
Hotel ZaZa Houston

Hotel ZaZa Houston Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The funky boutique Hotel ZaZa Houston (with a sister property in Dallas) is stylishly designed, with an excess of quirky artwork, patterned pillows and lampshades, and various adornments. Sometimes over-the-top, but often fun, the hotel establishes itself as a unique option for upscale travelers. Even the most basic rooms have a flair for color and design while offering spaciousness and rainforest showers in bathrooms. Located in Houston’s museum district, the ZaZa is near a number of important cultural attractions and dining options. The European-style pool and on-site restaurant, Monarch, keeps things convenient for those who are less interested in exploring.
Hotel Sorella

Hotel Sorella Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 266-room Hotel Sorella is a trendy, slightly upscale hotel in CITYCENTRE, a mixed-use development of shops, restaurants, and hotels in West Houston. In a quieter part of town, the modern, eclectic property is geared toward guests looking to enjoy shopping and fine dining more than the city’s main attractions, which are a 20-minute drive away. The guest rooms are simply and sparsely designed, but sizable enough at roughly 400 square feet for standard units. The outdoor pool has a fun vibe, especially at night while an on-site cafe, bistro-style restaurant, and full bar keep the party going.
Hotel Indigo Houston at the Galleria

Hotel Indigo Houston at the Galleria Rating: 3.5 Pearls

From the outside, the 131-room Hotel Indigo resembles the Embassy Suites chain across the way, but its interior is considerably more stylish. Cool cobalt blue walls, striped chairs, and beachy murals make it feel like a beach resort in the center of Houston. The rooms are fresh and bright, with tall ceilings and nautical-themed furnishings. Small kitchenettes feature sinks, tiny coffeemakers, and mini-fridges; microwaves are featured in all suites as well, and in standard rooms upon request. Modern bathrooms have walk-in showers, half enclosed with glass (there's no door). Crossroads Bistro & Bar serves casual fare for breakfast and dinner, and the small fitness center has modern equipment (though the free weights are beat up). Business travelers will likely appreciate the business center and meeting rooms, as shopping-minded visitors will appreciate the proximity to the Houston Galleria.
Embassy Suites Houston - Downtown

Embassy Suites Houston - Downtown Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Embassy Suites in downtown Houston goes above and beyond the expected standards of a mid-range chain hotel. Rather than drab furniture and so-so amenities, this hotel features bright, modern decor throughout, from the lobby to the 262 suites, while the heated rooftop pool has cool water features and quality lounge chairs. The hotel largely caters to business travelers -- with amenities such as free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour business center, 24-hour room service, and a 24-hour fitness center -- but families can also appreciate the big suites featuring separate living areas with sofa beds, wet bars, and huge flat-screen TVs. Freebies such as hot breakfast and a nightly reception are additional upsides. If you're bringing your car along, however, be prepared to pay a steep daily parking fee; unfortunately, that's the norm in the area.
Hilton Americas - Houston

Hilton Americas - Houston Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The large 1,200-room Hilton Americas - Houston is a swanky, upper-middle-range hotel in the city’s convention district. With an on-site fitness center, spa, and pool, there are plenty of ways to exercise and relax at the hotel. The 91,500 square feet of meeting space and the property’s proximity to outside convention centers make the Hilton highly convenient for business travelers. Sizable rooms are clean and modernly designed. The hotel’s height gives many rooms and common spaces a generous view of the city.
Sheraton Suites Houston Near the Galleria

Sheraton Suites Houston Near the Galleria Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Sheraton Suites' reputation as a business-friendly chain lives up to its name in this professional, unpretentious hotel near the Houston Galleria. The 281-suite property features a sophisticated lobby with a grand painting of the Texas landscape. One- or two-bedroom suites are well-appointed with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers equipped with Starbucks coffee. The rooms are classic and modest with cappuccino-colored walls and basic, contemporary hotel-style furniture. The beds have fluffy white bedding, and the bathrooms are nice and clean (although the wallpaper is a little old-fashioned). Amenities include a solid fitness center, a well-known steakhouse chain, and a lounge serving alcohol.
