Harveys Lake Tahoe

Harveys Lake Tahoe Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The oldest of the South Shore's casino hotels, the upper-middle-range Harveys has 740 rooms and suites, eight cafes and restaurants, a concert venue, and an on-site casino. The space is large, noisy, and institutional, with contemporary but generic rooms that could do with a bit of refurbishment. The location in the heart of the South Shore is an undeniable plus, but the MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa just down the road has much nicer rooms.
Border House at Crystal Bay

Border House at Crystal Bay Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Border House at Crystal Bay is a boutique 10-room hotel attached to a small casino. The rather plain exterior of the hotel gives way to spacious, somewhat luxurious rooms -- the decor features a mix of stylish modern furnishings and more ornate traditional elements, but with stone-clad floor-to-ceiling fireplace hearths and ceilings painted the same color as the walls, rooms can feel a bit cave-like. The gas fireplaces are nice elements though, especially during chilly winter months, as are the large flat-screen TVs and huge chromotherapy tubs. The restaurant and lounge are popular spots, as is the professional stage that hosts many well-known bands throughout the year. Perhaps because of that (and the casino, of course) this hotel is more about the nightlife -- those wanting a pool or outdoor-centric activities, including ski-in/ski-out access, should look elsewhere.
MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa

MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa Rating: 3.0 Pearls

One of three big casino hotels just over the Nevada state line, the MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa attracts casino-goers throughout the year as well as people who want easy access to the nearby Heavenly Ski Resort. The 437 rooms and suites here at are clean and bright, and the indoor pool with its own artificial waterfall is a highlight. There are also a casino, a spa, and a handful of restaurants, and the hotel is perhaps a tiny bit quieter than Harveys and Harrah's, the other two properties on the same strip.
The Ridge Tahoe

The Ridge Tahoe Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The 302-room Ridge Tahoe is a mid-range hotel located outside of town with gorgeous mountain views. Popular with families, this hotel has an arcade room, miniature golf course, two outdoor pools, and several hot tubs. There’s a restaurant on-site with a bar, and the hotel also has its own ski lift. There’s a free shuttle, but it can take over 15 minutes to reach the restaurants and casinos in town. Rooms are spacious and homey; some have stone fireplaces, balconies with mountain views, and kitchens. Guests wanting a more convenient location may want to check out Harveys Lake Tahoe.
