Merchant Hotel

Merchant Hotel Rating: 5.0 Pearls

Located in the heart of Belfast, The Merchant is grand and stylish, combining Victorian elegance with a modern Jazz Age vibe. There are several options for dining and drinks, including The Great Room, which serves a traditional afternoon tea, and Bert’s Bar, which has live jazz every night. Light sleepers might be wary of a hotel that provides earplugs to muffle noise from surrounding bars, particularly in some ground-floor rooms. Rates are in the splurge range, but that’s to be expected from the only five-star hotel in the city center — especially one that sells haute couture shoes in the gift shop. Travelers wanting a cheaper boutique hotel in the city center might try The Fitzwilliam Hotel, which has funky yet very modern decor.

Burrendale Hotel, Country Club & Spa

Burrendale Hotel, Country Club & Spa Rating: 4.5 Pearls

This upscale hotel in quaint Newcastle attracts couples and families in equal numbers with its many on-site features such as several restaurants and bars, a spa complete with an indoor pool, and event spaces which are popular venues for weddings. Guests also have free access to country club facilities, but the real standouts here are the rooms. Spacious, and individually decorated in everything from stylish stripes to feminine florals, these up-to-date accommodations include free Wi-Fi and large flat-screen TVs; DVD players are available upon request, as are mini-fridges, which are noticeably absent. Common spaces don't quite live up to the rooms, but are nonetheless well-kept.

The Fitzwilliam Hotel Belfast

The Fitzwilliam Hotel Belfast Rating: 4.5 Pearls

This upscale, über-contemporary hotel has gone to every effort to wow with a focus on funky chic design and a modern, moody vibe. Its smart and snazzy rooms haven't scrimped on comfort, with Egyptian cotton sheets and duck-down duvets. In-room tech also leaves nothing wanting. The hotel's low-lit restaurant is a design gem, while its stylish bar serves excellent cocktails. The location is right in Belfast's city center, and is thus within walking distance to many attractions and transport links. All in all, it's pretty well priced for a property of this caliber, though if it's just a little too hip, check out the Europa Hotel round the corner.

Culloden Estate & Spa

Culloden Estate & Spa Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The Culloden Estate is a popular spot among couples and honeymooners and it's not surprising; this luxurious historic property was once a palace, and it still sits on over 12 lush acres today. But instead of days filled with royal duties, guests here enjoy days filled with rest and relaxation, whether they're spent at the gorgeous spa, in the fine-dining establishments, or in the attractive rooms which come complete with free water and welcome trays. Bathrooms are small and there are few amenities for children, but otherwise it's hard to find fault with this Irish property.

City Hotel Derry

City Hotel Derry Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 146-room City Hotel Derry is a contemporary, upscale hotel with a prime location on the River Foyle just up the street from the Peace Bridge. It's got all the features you'd expect from a four-pearl hotel -- a fitness center, restaurant, bar, even an indoor pool -- though some may find the decor a bit generic. Rooms do have stylish accents, such as bold pops of color, as well as free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and tea and coffee facilities; Family Rooms provide flexible sleeping arrangements. Bathrooms are pretty basic, however, with white tile and shower/tub combos. All in all, it's a solid pick for both business and leisure travelers, and the central location is hard to top.

Tara Lodge

Tara Lodge Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 34-room Tara Lodge is a modern, friendly boutique in a leafy residential area of Belfast within walking distance of the city center. Rooms are contemporary yet homey, and don't scrimp on amenities -- especially in the higher-end rooms. Modern bathrooms too are well equipped, featuring extra fluffy towels and luxury toiletries. Free Wi-Fi and on-site parking are a big plus, but spaces are not guaranteed. Despite its location street noise has been reported, so if you're after quiet rather than leafy surrounds the same distance from city center and at similar rates, look up the Radisson Blu Hotel.

Bushmills Inn

Bushmills Inn Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The quaint Bushmills Inn in Antrim is quintessentially Irish in every respect: There are fireplaces burning peat or wood throughout the property, a fantastic restaurant serving locally sourced cuisine, Irish music performed certain nights at the Gas Bar, which is lit by traditional gaslight, and 41 cozy, cottage-style rooms. The inn has a rich history dating back to 1608, when a coach house and stables stood here, and the actual main inn building dates to the 1820s; the historic character has been carefully and thoughtfully preserved throughout. Views of the river are marred by the parking lot sitting right in front of it, but most guests are impressed enough by the inn's warmth and coziness that they find little to complain about.

Europa Hotel - Belfast

Europa Hotel - Belfast Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This landmark 272-room Belfast hotel has seen a lot in its four-decade history -- from plentiful VIP visits to numerous renovations and repairs -- while maintaining a buzzy air of understated grandeur. Its location couldn't be more central, right in the heart of bustling Belfast. Soundproofing ensures little street noise makes it to the rooms, which are known for a particular attention to comfortable bedding. The elegant Piano Lounge attracts locals as well as the odd celebrity, though the lack of fitness facilities on-site feels like an oversight. Overall, it's a solid central Belfast choice, though for a more chic contemporary feel try The Fitzwilliam nearby.
