Park Hyatt Aviara Resort

Park Hyatt Aviara Resort Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 373-room Park Hyatt Aviara features Spanish colonial architecture and a stunning setting just north of the Batiquitos Lagoon wildlife sanctuary, which makes for stunning views. It was formerly a Four Seasons property, but switching from one luxury brand to another didn't impact the hotel's comfortable, luxurious ambiance. The rooms are clean and spacious with classic decor, modern amenities (flat-screen TVs with DVD players and iPod docks), and large balconies. There are separate pool areas for families and adults, and the adults-only pool is attractive, with impressive views of the nearby lagoon and Arnold Palmer-designed golf course.

L'Auberge Del Mar

L'Auberge Del Mar Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 120-room L'Auberge Del Mar is one of the top hotels on the Southern California coastline. It's located in beautiful Del Mar Village, right next to the beach, and its farm-to-table restaurant is exceptional. But although rooms are homey and have high-tech amenities, some of the views could be better, and few have tubs.

The US Grant -- a Luxury Collection Hotel

The US Grant -- a Luxury Collection Hotel Rating: 5.0 Pearls

Built by Ulysses S. Grant's son in 1910, the 270-room U.S. Grant Hotel is one of the most celebrated and respected hotels within San Diego, known for its American luxury with a traditional European twist. Rooms are bright and classically elegant, with crown molding, crisp white linens, and modern amenities like flat-screen TVs. Bathrooms have large walk-in showers and deep bowl sinks. Although the hotel's overall elegance and luxe vibe are charming and captivating, it lacks a pool (although guests can use the Westin's across the street), and the fees for parking and Wi-Fi can add up.

Rancho Valencia Resort

Rancho Valencia Resort Rating: 5.0 Pearls

This 49-room luxury resort is located in Rancho Santa Fe, a wealthy residential community in the hills of Southern California, on 40 acres of lush grounds. The Spanish-style suites, all with fireplaces and patios, are located in 26 casitas spread across the sprawling property, creating a rare level of privacy for guests. Excellent freebies (including Wi-Fi, minibar items, parking, morning juice and newspaper delivery, and breakfast), as well as a wonderful restaurant and an upscale fitness center with free classes contribute to the experience of exclusive pampering.

The Grand Del Mar

The Grand Del Mar Rating: 5.0 Pearls

This 249-room Spanish-Colonial-style resort in the rolling hills near Del Mar is stunning, from the old-world decor to the enormous rooms to the luxurious spa. It features four pools, excellent restaurants, an 18-hole golf course, an Equestrian Center, and free car service in a Mercedes or Cadillac Escalade. But since it's inland, there are no ocean views; consider L'Auberge del Mar for closer proximity to the sand.

Four Seasons Residence Club Aviara, North San Diego

Four Seasons Residence Club Aviara, North San Diego Rating: 4.5 Pearls

This isn't a typical Four Season in that it is a condominium complex, not a luxury hotel. The complex is massive, with two "neighborhoods" called (Summits and Meadows), each with its own heated outdoor pool and small fitness center. Because this is more a residence than a hotel, the vibe here is a lot more laid-back than at other Four Seasons properties -- there's no fine dining restaurant (just poolside snack bars), and the expansive grounds give it an outdoorsy feel that many guests enjoy. But the actual rooms have the typical Four Seasons upscale classic American look, with a beige-and-blue color scheme and lots of hardwood accents. Guests can rent a Superior Room with a kitchenette or upgrade to one of the one- or two-bedroom villas and residences, with lots of living space and a full kitchen. Overall, the Four Seasons is a solid choice especially for families -- it's in a quiet area (right by a golf course) and gives guests the option of cooking meals in their kitchens/kitchenettes.

Palomar San Diego

Palomar San Diego Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The Hotel Palomar (formerly the Se San Diego) is one of San Diego's most luxurious hotels, and also one of its coolest, with a trendy rooftop bar, zen design, and a location just north of the lively Gaslamp Quarter, next to a major concert venue. But the nightlife can be noisy and most rooms have king beds, so leave the kids at home.

The Lodge at Torrey Pines

The Lodge at Torrey Pines Rating: 4.5 Pearls

With its proximity to some of the most beautiful spots in San Diego, the 170-room Lodge at Torrey Pines is a haven for nature lovers and golf enthusiasts opting for a rustic, relaxed vibe. Rooms and common areas feature craftsman-styled decor and furnishings, and the rooms are sweet and spacious, with a unique woods-y feel -- though some are a bit dark and even a tad bland. The bathrooms are massive, with custom-made toiletries, and most feature beautiful soaking tubs and stained glass windows. The lodge's on-site facilities are up to par for a luxury resort -- saltwater pool with underwater music, beautiful spa, and a famous golf course that's a stop on the PGA Tour.

Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines

Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The four-pearl Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines is one of only two hotels overlooking the world class Torrey Pines Golf Course and cliffs of La Jolla on the Pacific Ocean. The expansive property includes beautifully landscaped grounds, a heated outdoor pool, and tennis courts. Sophisticated and elegant rooms have furnished balconies accessible via sliding glass doors, and up-to-date amenities such as large flat-screen TVs and plenty of outlets. While Wi-Fi is free in common spaces, however, there's a fee for in-room Internet. Lunch and dinner are served a la carte at Torreyana Grille or the on-site coffee shop.

Grande Colonial Hotel

Grande Colonial Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

With a central location in La Jolla, a heated outdoor pool, and an array of great services -- including in-room massages, and daily turndown -- this upscale historic boutique is a solid pick for a relaxing coastal getaway. Rooms have classic, contemporary decor with a European feel, and modern technologies, such as iPod docks, HD flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Suites have wooden floors, cute kitchenettes, and cozy fireplaces. There are several beaches within walking distance, and dozens of restaurants and boutiques nearby -- but there is no fitness center on-site, and some rooms are a tad small for the price. Travelers wanting more spacious rooms and an on-site spa could try the Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa.
