Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver

Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The Shangri-La offers uber-luxe digs in Downtown Vancouver. Catering to the business traveler (mainly due to its location), the hotel's large rooms feature free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs with DVR, bedside controls for curtains and lights, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking downtown. But the massive granite-and-marble bathrooms are the real highlight, featuring separate showers and tubs, as well as flat-screen TVs. The hotel also has a Jean-Georges restaurant and a hip spa, both of which are extremely pricey and only add to the hype.

Fairmont Pacific Rim

Fairmont Pacific Rim Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 377-room Fairmont is an upscale property on the northern edge of Downtown Vancouver, across the street from the Convention Center, and blocks to the harbor and public transport. The hotel has a modern, business-y vibe throughout, with clean lines and contemporary decor. Up-to-date amenities include an outstanding fitness center with a yoga studio, a rooftop heated pool open year-round, and a high-end spa. Spacious rooms feature Nespresso coffeemakers, plush name-brand beds, floor-to-ceiling windows (most boasting great views of the port and the mountains), flat-screen TVs and iPod docks.

Rosewood Hotel Georgia

Rosewood Hotel Georgia Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The Rosewood Hotel Georgia is a historic property with a downtown Vancouver location. The 156 rooms and suites are luxurious and sophisticated, with plush furnishings, huge flat-screen TVs, and massive marble bathrooms with heated floors. Bathrooms are a real perk at this hotel, as all have huge walk-in showers and deep soaking tubs. Though the hotel first opened in 1927, it has modern touches including free Wi-Fi and iPod docks. Property highlights include a funky indoor pool, modern fitness center, rooftop alfresco lounge, and 24-hour room service. This pet-friendly property also has a central location for exploring downtown Vancouver's main attractions.

Pan Pacific Vancouver

Pan Pacific Vancouver Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The four-and-a-half pearl Pan Pacific Hotel Vancouver is on top of Vancouver's iconic Canada Place building, which it shares with the Vancouver Convention Centre and the cruise line terminal. Buzzing with activity, the huge chain hotel has 503 elegant rooms. There’s a sophistication to the hotel that makes it a good fit for business travelers and those seeking luxurious accommodations, though some rooms are a little bland and slightly dated. The views of the harbor and mountains are breathtaking and can be seen from the rooftop pool, the lounge terrace, and from most of the rooms. Guests looking for a more intimate hotel may want to consider L'Hermitage Hotel, a small boutique hotel with elegant rooms in a residential building.

Fairmont Waterfront

Fairmont Waterfront Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The Fairmont Waterfront is an upscale option in downtown Vancouver. The highlight of this hotel may be its location, as the name suggests, overlooking the harbor -- the pool and over half of the rooms feature beautiful water views. Room decor is contemporary and sophisticated, if a bit generic for such a high-end brand. Hotel features are numerous, including a small fitness center, year-round outdoor pool, and even an herb garden -- but massages are the only spa services available. The Fairmont Waterfront attracts families with its free kids' welcome gifts and bicycle rentals, and business travelers with its 24-hour room service, 24-hour business center, and meeting rooms. However, visitors may want to compare prices with the nearby Loden Hotel before booking.

Loden Hotel

Loden Hotel Rating: 4.5 Pearls

This 77-room luxury boutique has a modern, stylish feel, with a glam lobby (think: velvet couches, dark wood ceilings, and a stunning black-and-white granite fireplace surround) and a popular French bistro. The large, sleek rooms may be the highlight, with subtle earth tones, floor-to-ceiling windows, and decadent marble bathrooms, but the Downtown Vancouver location is convenient as well. The only real downsides are the extra fees for valet parking and Wi-Fi.

Wedgewood Hotel & Spa

Wedgewood Hotel & Spa Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The Wedgewood Hotel & Spa is a luxury boutique hotel with a gorgeous lobby and 83 beautiful rooms. It's located near the shopping and entertainment center of Vancouver and within walking distance of the Vancouver Convention Centre and plenty of restaurants. There's an upscale French restaurant and lounge on-site with an elegant dining room. There’s also a small fitness center and a spa, but no pool. Guests looking for an outdoor pool may want to check out the Westin Bayshore instead.

Hyatt Regency Vancouver

Hyatt Regency Vancouver Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Popular with business travelers, the Hyatt Regency Vancouver is an upscale chain hotel with 644 stylish rooms. The hotel is located on the busy Burrard Street in the financial district of Vancouver, near plenty of shopping options and not far from the Convention Centre. Rooms are sleek and spacious, with dark gray decor and large desks. There’s a Starbucks, a restaurant, and a bar on-site, as well as a large 24-hour fitness center and an outdoor heated pool and hot tub. Wi-Fi is available, but for a fee. The similarly priced Coast Coal Harbour has free Wi-Fi and, like the Hyatt, offers pet-friendly rooms.

Carmana Plaza

Carmana Plaza Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 120-room Carmana Plaza offers no-frills, apartment-style rooms with kitchens and, in many cases, stunning views of the mountains or the sea through floor-to-ceiling windows. There is no restaurant on-site -- not even a breakfast area -- but the hotel is one block from the restaurants and cafes on lively Robson Street, and there's a grocery store across the road.

The Georgian Court Hotel

The Georgian Court Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The upscale, 180-room Georgian Court Hotel is on the edge of Downtown Vancouver, within walking distance of numerous Vancouver attractions. Rooms are large and contemporary, if a tad generic, with flat-screen TVs and mahogany accents, and a special women's-only floor (known as the Orchid Floor) is available, with rooms that include curling irons, flat irons, yoga mats, and fashion magazines for no extra fee. The fitness center is small, and other downtown hotels are more centrally located, but the hotel provides a free shuttle to downtown sites.
