Grand Lucayan

Grand Lucayan Rating: 4.0 Pearls

It's the top lodging on Grand Bahama -- immaculate grounds; great beds; convenient, scenic location. It has a wide range of rooms, features, and dining options, but it can feel a bit impersonal.

Old Bahama Bay Resort & Yacht Harbour

Old Bahama Bay Resort & Yacht Harbour Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A small, isolated, time-share-style hotel with big, beautiful suites, a marina, a friendly staff that zips around on golf carts, and managers that greet returning guests like family -- Old Bahama Bay feels more yacht club than resort. But activities are limited -- just boating or lounging by the isolated beach or pool -- and to some travelers, it's boring.

Melia Nassau Beach Resort

Melia Nassau Beach Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort has great rooms, a gorgeous beachfront, three great pools, a top-notch gym, and a friendly and cheerful staff. But it's a massive property -- 694 rooms -- with little to eat nearby. This means that guests are stuck with the Sheraton's own overpriced, mediocre fare. Still, it's a great value.

Taino Beach Resort & Clubs

Taino Beach Resort & Clubs Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This aging family-friendly beach property on Freeport’s southeastern coast has 157 time-share condo units in three sections. The renovated Marlin section has fresh decor and stainless steel appliances, but guests will find that the other two sections -- Coral and Ocean -- have seen better days. The restaurant serves a buffet breakfast buffet as well as a la carte lunches and dinners alongside sea views (especially nice over morning coffee); guests can also ferry to Port Lucaya for a number of shops, restaurants and bars. For the resort's size, the pool complex is impressive with a 100 foot waterslide, lazy river, swim-up pool bar, children’s area, and hot tub. Lucaya Watersports & Tours, based on the property, can arrange a number of rentals and excursions. Given low prices for the units, guest should expect fees for everything else.

British Colonial Hilton Nassau Hotel

British Colonial Hilton Nassau Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

A fine business hotel -- pleasant staff, convenient location, a snazzy lobby, guest rooms renovated in 2009 -- but leisure travelers will find several pleasant amenities, as well. Chief among those is an attractive pool area and sports activities. The beach is small, the rooms lack balconies (save for on the sixth floor), and though the hotel is close to the sights of downtown Nassau, the area is dead at night.

Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach-An All Inclusive Resort

Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach-An All Inclusive Resort Rating: 3.0 Pearls

On the southeast shore of Grand Bahama near Freeport is one of the few all-inclusive resorts on the entire island with 274 rooms spread out over 26 acres. This Wyndham offers low prices for families on a budget. Rooms are divided into two types: the Vista rooms, which have a white modern color scheme and ocean views, and the Flora rooms, with fewer amenities and shockingly bright Caribbean decor. All rooms in the two-story bungalows have balconies, coffeemakers and free Wi-Fi, and are an easy walk to get to the three restaurants, the main lounge and bar, as well as the theater for nightly entertainment. A snack bar, pizza joint, trapeze, and water sports keep kids busy, but parents may want to invest in a good pair of headphones if looking for peace and quiet from the vendors and animation activities.

Island Seas Resort

Island Seas Resort Rating: 2.5 Pearls

This 189-unit condo complex is located on a quiet stretch of beach called Silver Point, on the southern coast of Grand Bahama Island. Despite its aging exterior, most of the spacious one- and two-bedroom units have been spruced up with new appliances, mattresses, and fresh decor. Service is spotty and time-share pitches are the norm, but past that, the relaxed vibe gives those who want a simple vacation (think turquoise waves, an outdoor pool, and fully equipped kitchens) a chance for real peace and quiet, save for the occasional vendor. Two restaurants, an outdoor bar, excursions, and a shuttle to Port Lucaya are useful features, but a car is still recommended.

The Cove Atlantis

The Cove Atlantis Rating: 5.0 Pearls

This 600-suite tower opened in 2007 and displaced Royal Towers as the best, and therefore most expensive, address at Atlantis. Chic open-air surroundings, oceanfront suites, and an air of exclusivity attracts families and couples who prefer to be slightly removed from the thickest crowds. Modern, sophisticated suites (many with views) have modern technology, balconies, and extra large bathrooms. The property shares a separate beach and large family pool with neighboring Reef Tower, but only Cove guests have access to the party pool called Cain at the Cove -- for adults only -- with private cabanas, outdoor gambling, and a live DJ. Like all Atlantis pools, the Cain closes early, so dressed-up guests can then spend their cash at upscale restaurants on-site, such as Mesa Grill, or take a shuttle to Royal Towers and Marina Village for more selection.
One&Only Ocean Club

One&Only Ocean Club Rating: 5.0 Pearls

This is called One&Only for good reason -- there’s nothing quite like it on Paradise Island, or anywhere in the Bahamas for that matter. The 106 rooms and suites, split into two sections, are luxurious, though those in the newer Crescent Wing are a bit more modern and stylish. Guests have access to the amenities at the Atlantis but the advantage of being removed from the crowds. Expansive manicured grounds have two outdoor pools, a romantic garden and statuary modeled after Versailles (a dream for weddings), and the endless stretch of white-sand beach and turquoise waves. Health and wellness nuts are spoilt for choice with daily yoga, an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, an indoor/outdoor fitness center, and a Balinese-style spa with private villas. After a day in the sun, guests return to the room to find champagne and strawberries waiting, and many choose to begin their evening with sunset drinks at Jean-George's Dune restaurant.
Fowl Cay Resort

Fowl Cay Resort Rating: 5.0 Pearls

Crowded beaches are unheard of on this private island resort where a maximum of 28 guests at a time have free range of 50 acres and three beaches. Personal boats for daily excursions, on-call service, spacious villas with fully stocked kitchens and wet bars, and a host of all-inclusive activities make Fowl Cay a standout gem in the Exumas. However, some of the villas feature outdated decor and worn furnishings that seem inconsistent with the resort's high nightly rates.
