Four Seasons Lanai, The Lodge at Koele

Four Seasons Lanai, The Lodge at Koele Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 102-room Four Seasons Lodge at Koele is a serene, upscale resort with a Greg Norman-designed golf course. The resort is just a short walk from town, and features top-rated (but expensive) dining, casually elegant rooms, horseback riding facilities, and three tennis courts. The tranquil English-style grounds dotted by Asian accents -- a pagoda sits across the pond from a gazebo -- have a peaceful air and attract honeymooners and couples; few families visit the hotel due to the small size of the pool and the lack of direct beach access (the hotel is about a 20-minute drive from the sand). But guests at the Lodge are granted access to the sister property's facilities (and beach) at Manele Bay via a free shuttle.

St. Regis Princeville

St. Regis Princeville Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 251-room St. Regis Princeville is considered by many to be the premier luxury option in Hawaii, and given the stunning setting overlooking Hanalei Bay, it's hard to disagree. Guests can expect warm, sophisticated decor, suites with personal butler service, world-class golf, and a memorable breakfast buffet on a terrace with gorgeous ocean views. The discerning clientele this resort attracts will find little to fault, though if one had to nitpick, the formal dress code might not appeal to everyone, and food prices -- as one might expect at this caliber of property -- are steep. The location on Kauai's lush, ruggedly beautiful northern coast makes for natural beauty that's unparalleled, but rain is more frequent here and the beach, though lovely, doesn't have the finest sand.

The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua

The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua Rating: 5.0 Pearls

Reopened in January 2008 after a $180-million renovation, the 463-room Ritz-Carlton Kapalua boasts up-to-date rooms, top-notch dining, a quality spa, polished service, and beautifully landscaped grounds of national park proportions. It all comes at a slight risk, however, since its location comes with the least consistent, windiest, and rainiest weather of all of Maui's major resort areas.

Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This upscale 533-room resort is perched on Anaehoomalu Bay on the Kohala coast, offering on-site beach access, lovely grounds with winding paths and fish ponds, and two pools. Rooms are big and stylish, but they lack Wi-Fi, and bathrooms are typically on the small side. The location -- next to two championship golf courses, and within walking distance of shops and restaurants -- is convenient, especially since guests may be inclined to skip the pricey, mediocre on-site dining.

The Westin Maui Resort & Spa

The Westin Maui Resort & Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The expansive Westin Maui Resort & Spa is an upscale property with direct access to swimmable Kaanapali Beach and popular Whalers' Village. There are a whopping 759 rooms with simple, Hawaiian-inspired decor (not quite as upscale as one may expect at a four-pearl hotel). With the number of guests and size of the resort, lines can be long and service is more efficient than personal. Prices here are lower than neighboring hotels, though, and this Westin offers a slew of above-average amenities like a five-pool aquatic playground, four restaurants, and a full-service spa and gym. Resort fees are annoying, but they're a common theme in Maui. If you're looking for fewer kids and an infinity pool, compare rates at the similarly priced Andaz Maui at Wailea -- but you'll lose the proximity to Whalers' Village.

Hilton Waikoloa Village

Hilton Waikoloa Village Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Hilton Waikoloa Village is the largest and most family-friendly resort in the Kailua-Kona area, and is often referred to as the “Disneyland“ of the Big Island. With 1,200 rooms, three large pool areas, extensive outdoor grounds and a variety of on-site dining options, the Hilton Waikoloa is indeed a small village in and of itself, and a tram and canal boats help guests travel across the sprawling property. Each of the three towers on the property has a different style of room decor, but the overall feel the same: clean and generic. The biggest downsides? The property is showing its age, the restaurants are pricey (and mostly mediocre), and there's no beach on the actual ocean -- just a thin strip of sand on the man-made lagoon. Luckily Lagoon Tower rooms were renovated in 2012.

Hilton Grand Vacations Club at Waikoloa Beach Resort

Hilton Grand Vacations Club at Waikoloa Beach Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Hilton Grand Vacations Club offers an affordable two-bedroom option within the Waikoloa Beach Resort. The living room, dining, and kitchen areas are well-equipped for multiple guests and longer stays, much like other condos in the area, but access to the Waikoloa Hilton allows guests to enjoy resort-like perks close by. The lobby area and main pool are beautifully designed, though both can easily become crowded (along with other facilities) due to high traffic and small space. Some areas are a bit dated, but overall it's a great value for the price and for those looking for a more at-home-type extended stay.

Makena Beach and Golf Resort

Makena Beach and Golf Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Makena Beach and Golf Resort is an upscale property with a laid-back vibe on family friendly Maluaka Beach. Rooms have (some) private lanais overlooking the ocean, cherry wood furniture, and granite vanities in the bathrooms. The rates here are lower than what you'll find at nearby luxury resorts, but the swimming pool is much smaller. Still, there's off-the-beach snorkeling, three restaurants, free oceanfront yoga, and a spacious fitness center. The Hawaiian Rain Forest spa helps make this hotel an attractive option for honeymooners and couples. There's no resort fee and lots of free extras like parking, Wi-Fi, and resort activities, so guests won't feel nickel and dimed. It may be worth comparing rates at nearby four-pearl Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa for many of the same features, though you'll pay for parking and Wi-Fi there.

Turtle Bay Resort

Turtle Bay Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This self-contained upscale resort on a peninsular outcropping of Oahu’s north shore focuses on relaxation and outdoor activities. Families -- and couples in particular -- come here for the golf course, horseback riding, surfing, and other outdoor activities; nightlife is limited to the property’s bars and restaurants. A car is necessary for getting to dining options beyond the resort, which some guests have commented is desirable because of high prices at the on-site restaurants; the nearby town of Haleiwa is about a 25-minute drive, though popular local food spots like Giovanni’s Aloha Shrimp in Kahuku are much closer to the resort. Rooms are upscale, chic, and beachy, and most have ocean views.

Pacific Beach Hotel

Pacific Beach Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This large 839-room hotel is popular with tourists and families because of its exceptional location just across the street from Waikiki Beach and its wide array of convenient services (an on-site restaurant, a spa, laundry facilities and more). Nearly all guests have noted that though the hotel is clean it could use an upgrade, especially the dated decor of the rooms. Some floors close to the meeting rooms and gym can get noisy. Take note that the Pacific Beach Hotel charges a daily service fee to all guests in addition to the nightly rate.
