The Greenwich Hotel

The Greenwich Hotel Rating: 5.0 Pearls

This virtually flawless 88-room TriBeCa hotel (opened in 2008 by Robert de Niro, among others) offers large, homey rooms, breathtaking design, and very attentive service. Even better: free Wi-Fi; free minibar snacks; and free Wii video games by request. Better still: an underground pool; Shibui Spa; premier gym; and the homestyle Italian Locanda Verde restaurant.

Langham Place Fifth Avenue

Langham Place Fifth Avenue Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 214-room Langham Place Fifth Avenue is a modern, luxurious hotel conveniently located close to the popular tourist sites and corporate offices of Midtown Manhattan. Rooms are huge and come with top-notch features (free Wi-Fi, iPod docks, high-end linens and toiletries), but the decor is plain and lacks character. For more striking design, consider the nearby Chatwal or the (slightly less luxurious) Andaz hotels.

The Mark

The Mark Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The Mark, an historic hotel built in 1927, re-opened in 2009 as one of the best contemporary luxury hotels in New York. The hotel's stunning interiors by France's premier designer are colorful and bold rather than gilded and stuffy, and there's a restaurant and bar from one of New York's most famous chefs. Comfortable, high-tech rooms and personalized service make it a great option for anyone who can afford it.

The Plaza

The Plaza Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The century-old, 282-room Plaza is a New York landmark. A $400 million overhaul in 2008 gave the huge rooms gold-plated bathroom fixtures, but it also converted most rooms overlooking Central Park into privately owned residences. Still, the exceptional spa and 24-hour butler service make it worth the splurge.

The St. Regis New York

The St. Regis New York Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The grand, century-old St. Regis is known for its extraordinary service -- rivaled only by that of the Plaza -- but the hotel has many other outstanding features, including 229 elegant rooms with great amenities; a world-class spa, and a great location on Fifth Avenue. While it lacks the pool and Central Park views of the Mandarin Oriental, a famed Bloody Mary at the King Cole Bar more than compensates.

Four Seasons New York

Four Seasons New York Rating: 5.0 Pearls

Deliberately business-like, the 368-room Four Seasons in Midtown East has all the luxury essentials: stylish lobby, beck-and-call service, a fine spa and fitness center, and some of the city's largest rooms. Plus, guests can use spa facilities for free. But before booking, check the rates at the Waldorf-Astoria (more historic) or the Mandarin Oriental (better gym).

Mandarin Oriental, New York

Mandarin Oriental, New York Rating: 5.0 Pearls

It's not an icon like the Plaza or the Pierre -- but so what? The Mandarin Oriental, located across Columbus Circle from Central Park, offers a dizzying array of modern luxuries -- a 75-foot pool, one of the city's best spas, sweeping views from nearly every common area, and superb on-site fine-dining options, to name a few -- even as it upholds traditional values and outstanding service.

W New York Downtown

W New York Downtown Rating: 4.5 Pearls

When it opened in 2010, this W hotel brought the suit-focused Financial District with a dose of cool. It's a sleek hotel, and its biggest assets are its stylish lobby lounge (with huge wrap-around terrace) and its proximity to Ground Zero (which means perfect views of the Freedom Tower). Other features include a nice fitness center (with great views), a small business center, meeting rooms, and a restaurant by the well-regarded BLT chain. Many tourists would prefer to be in a hipper, quainter, or more central neighborhood, but the hotel is close to Wall Street, Trinity Church, Battery Park, the ferry to the Statue of Liberty, and of course the 9/11 Memorial. Travelers who like the idea of a hip hotel in the Financial District can also consider Gild Hall, about a 10-minute walk to the east.

The Refinery Hotel

The Refinery Hotel Rating: 4.5 Pearls

This stylish urban boutique hotel in New York's Garment District is located in a historic building that was once a tea salon and hat factory. The property's past inspired its present industrial-chic design, and small details such as decorative milliner's tools pay homage to the building's former function. In the lobby, cool white stone and Gothic arches are contrasted against colorful contemporary art, while in the rooms, a minimalist black-and-white motif is warmed up by the oak hardwood floors. Features include a fitness center, a lobby bar (named for the historic tea salon's owner), Parker & Quinn bistro, and a cool rooftop bar. The location is within walking distance of popular sights such as the Empire State Building, Bryant Park, and Herald Square.

Dream Downtown

Dream Downtown Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The 316-room Dream Downtown is a futuristic-looking hotel located directly behind the Maritime in Chelsea, near the border with the trendy Meatpacking District. The hotel blends public spaces together in a unique way: The fitness center has portholes overlooking the pool, and the pool itself has a glass bottom that looks down into the lobby. The hotel's scene is decidedly hip, especially at rooftop PH-D lounge (a popular celeb haunt). Gold King rooms have portholes surrounding the bed with killer views. Aside from the pool, nightclub, and snazzy interior decor, hotel features include a 24-hour gym, IGK luxury hair salon, a rotating art exhibit space, and two Mexican eateries. It's easily one of the hippest options in this area, and has edgier design than the nearby Gansevoort and Maritime.
