The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas

The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Ritz-Carlton is St. Thomas' classiest resort, located only five minutes from Red Hook's fun dining and yacht scene. Its private sailboat, fitness center, spa, and soft-sand beach -- a marine-life sanctuary -- are all among the best in St. Thomas. But the food and service don't compare to swankier Ritzs elsewhere.

Sugar Bay Resort and Spa

Sugar Bay Resort and Spa Rating: 3.5 Pearls

A clean, modern, family-oriented resort with a full-service spa, an excellent snorkeling beach, and service that rivals (even bests) the pricier Ritz-Carlton -- Sugar Bay Resort and Spa is a great pick for the price. The all-inclusive plan, which is covered in the cost, can save drinkers some cash, but the on-site food is average; drive five minutes to Red Hook for better restaurants.

The Westin St. John Resort & Villas

The Westin St. John Resort & Villas Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Arguably the best family resort in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the 175-room Westin has a huge pool, a fun beach with trampolines, great kids' camp, and kitchen-equipped villas in addition to its standard rooms. But for the price, its worn rooms and lackadaisical staff don't compare to the Wyndham on St. Thomas.

Bolongo Bay Beach Resort

Bolongo Bay Beach Resort Rating: 2.5 Pearls

Family-owned and run since 1974, Bolongo is a laid-back resort with an excellent beach, great food, and a warm, helpful staff that keeps guests coming back year after year, despite the small pool and scarce features. But beware the "Value Rooms," which have old, sagging mattresses.

Windward Passage Hotel

Windward Passage Hotel Rating: 2.0 Pearls

With no beach near the Holiday Inn, it's not an ideal vacation destination. However, it's close to the cruise ship port, walking distance from the seaplane airport to the British Virgin Islands, and about a 10-minute drive from the international airport. Put simply, it's a fairly clean, comfortable place to sleep while waiting to go somewhere fun.

Caneel Bay Resort

Caneel Bay Resort Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Built from a historic sugar plantation, this profoundly serene 166-room resort sits on 170 acres of a protected national park dotted with seven remote beaches. Even with a quaint pool and rustic rooms that lack TVs and phones, Caneel's attentive service and unparalleled setting make it one of the Caribbean's best resorts.

Frenchman's Reef & Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort

Frenchman's Reef & Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A clean, modern resort with stunning views, this 478-room Marriott is a cut above every other hotel in St. Thomas–, except, maybe, the pricier Ritz Carlton. It's sprawling, the food's overpriced, and it can, at times, become packed with conventioneers. But its excellent gym, great pools, top-notch beds, and soft-sand beach rival the island's best. Extensive renovations in 2011 only made things better.

Sapphire Beach Resort and Marina

Sapphire Beach Resort and Marina Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Made up 171 old, worn condo units and villas, all of which have a full kitchen, the Sapphire Beach Resort has clearly seen better days -- note that its restaurant has been boarded up since December 2008. But its location -- on a superb beach, a five-minute drive from fun bars and quality restaurants in Red Hook -- makes it worth the price.

Elysian Beach Resort

Elysian Beach Resort Rating: 2.5 Pearls

A basic resort with a time-share focus, the Elysian has funky old rooms, one of the best beaches in St. Thomas, and two beachside restaurants that even locals frequent. But service is nil and everything costs extra -- the gym and even room cleaning costs something steep! Worse still, there's a fee-per-night "energy surcharge" -- just to keep the lights on!
