Caneel Bay Resort

Caneel Bay Resort Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Built from a historic sugar plantation, this profoundly serene 166-room resort sits on 170 acres of a protected national park dotted with seven remote beaches. Even with a quaint pool and rustic rooms that lack TVs and phones, Caneel's attentive service and unparalleled setting make it one of the Caribbean's best resorts.

Secret Harbour Beach Resort

Secret Harbour Beach Resort Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Secret Harbor Beach Resort is an upscale boutique property located on Nazareth Bay on the East End of St. Thomas. The resort’s beach is truly a tropical paradise, with palm trees, hammocks, loungers, white sand, and turquoise water. The resort has two on-site restaurants and a lively beach bar. Guests have a choice of Studios or One- or Two-Bedroom Condos, and each has updated decor (except for some bedspreads) and fully equipped kitchens. All units are beachfront and offer great views. The pool is slightly off-site, a two-minute walk to another property, but with this beach, you won’t miss it.

The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas

The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Ritz-Carlton is St. Thomas' classiest resort, located only five minutes from Red Hook's fun dining and yacht scene. Its private sailboat, fitness center, spa, and soft-sand beach -- a marine-life sanctuary -- are all among the best in St. Thomas. But the food and service don't compare to swankier Ritzs elsewhere.

Magens Point Resort

Magens Point Resort Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Located up narrow, winding mountain roads, Magens Point Resort is a secluded hillside property that has magnificent views of Magens Bay and the surrounding area. The pool, bar, and restaurant are fun and lively, and the resort has an energetic, friendly atmosphere. Magens Point offers some unexpected perks for an upper-middle-range property -- an on-site deli and convenience store, two gaming rooms, a large fitness center, spa, and tennis courts. However, the rooms are basic and in need of some updating and the resort is not located on the beach -- it is a half mile away.

Sugar Bay Resort and Spa

Sugar Bay Resort and Spa Rating: 3.5 Pearls

A clean, modern, family-oriented resort with a full-service spa, an excellent snorkeling beach, and service that rivals (even bests) the pricier Ritz-Carlton -- Sugar Bay Resort and Spa is a great pick for the price. The all-inclusive plan, which is covered in the cost, can save drinkers some cash, but the on-site food is average; drive five minutes to Red Hook for better restaurants.

The Westin St. John Resort & Villas

The Westin St. John Resort & Villas Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Arguably the best family resort in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the 175-room Westin has a huge pool, a fun beach with trampolines, great kids' camp, and kitchen-equipped villas in addition to its standard rooms. But for the price, its worn rooms and lackadaisical staff don't compare to the Wyndham on St. Thomas.

Point Pleasant Resort

Point Pleasant Resort Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The upper-middle-range Point Pleasant Resort is a large, spacious hillside property on the East End of the island, a convenient, scenic location close to Red Hook's restaurants and shopping. Features include three pools, an on-site restaurant, and a spa. The villas are privately owned and managed, with varying decor, but each unit is spacious with a large living room and fully equipped kitchen. There is a small but rocky beach in front of the property that doesn’t have much room for lounging, but guests are free to use the beach next door at Sugar Bay Resort. The kitchen-equipped condos at the mid-range Paradise Cove are cheaper, but the property has only one small pool and is not on the beach.

Paradise Cove Oceanfront Villas & Suites

Paradise Cove Oceanfront Villas & Suites Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Paradise Cove is a small 21-room property on the East End of the island. Around the corner from Red Hook on a quiet side street, the property is serene and peaceful. There are stunning views of Nazareth Bay throughout the resort and a distinctive tearoom is both convenient and delicious. While the rooms in the Escape building are nicely updated (and pricier), the other rooms are dated and in need of a facelift. However, the resort is still a good mid-range option for those looking to save some money in the pricey Red Hook area.

BEST WESTERN Carib Beach Resort

BEST WESTERN Carib Beach Resort Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Located right outside of the airport gates, the Best Western Carib Beach is a convenient and affordable accommodation option, especially for travelers staying a short time or continuing on to another destination. The rooms are typical of a mid-range hotel -- basic but functional with coffeemakers, hairdryers, and flat-screen TVs. The hotel went through extensive renovations in 2014 and newer bathrooms as well as upgrades to the pool, restaurant, and grounds are apparent. The on-site restaurant, Oceanside Bistro, is surprisingly good and the bar area is lively. However, the beach is small and you can’t swim there.

Island Beachcomber Hotel

Island Beachcomber Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The first beachfront hotel on St. Thomas, Island Beachcomber Hotel has been mostly family owned since 1956. The hotel is located right next to the airport, which is convenient for island hoppers or guests staying only one night. However, there is a good amount of plane noise. Island Beachcomber is located on a gorgeous beach and has some of the lowest prices for a beachfront room on the island. The tradeoff is that the rooms are dated and have some maintenance issues. If you want beachfront and convenience but don’t want to pay a lot, Island Beachcomber is a good choice.
