The Nines, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Portland

The Nines, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Portland Rating: 4.5 Pearls

One of the newest luxury properties in town, The Nines, housed in the former Meier & Frank department store building, is easily one of the snazziest places to stay in the city. Its modern common areas have just a dash of quirkiness, and the 331 rooms are classically chic, with Tiffany-blue accents and elegant furniture pieces. There are also a couple of restaurants on-site, including the rooftop Departure, a trendy pan-Asian spot with a great dim sum menu. Among the hotel's eco-friendly efforts are half-off rates for the otherwise outrageously expensive valet parking for guests with hybrid cars, and wall-mounted bathroom toiletries instead of individual take-home mini-containers. The hotel has a fitness center equipped with a full range of cardio- and weight-training equipment, but no pool or hot tub. Guests who want a pool might want to consider the less-luxurious Embassy Suites Downtown, the Hilton, or the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront.
The Heathman Hotel

The Heathman Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

One of Portland's best-known and oldest landmark hotels, The Heathman, built in 1927, is one of the most classically elegant spots to stay in town -- it was the setting for many of the "Fifty Shades of Grey" scenes. This centrally located property has 150 rooms, including suites, with an "Art of Sleep" bed menu offering guests a choice of TempurPedic, European Pillow-Top, or European Feather-Top beds. Other in-room extras include French coffee presses with Portland Roasting Company coffee. The Heathman includes a small business center and a fitness center, and free Wi-Fi throughout. A big highlight is the extensive lending library housing thousands of autographed editions, many by local authors or those who have stayed in the hotel. The on-site Heathman Restaurant and Bar gets rave reviews from visitors and Portlanders alike, and the daily afternoon tea in the Tea Court Lounge has become a bit of an institution in Portland. Considering its location and opulence, the Heathman's rates are reasonable, but guests might want to compare them with the Benson Hotel down the street, which has a similarly historic atmosphere and arguably more elegant rooms.
Hotel deLuxe

Hotel deLuxe Rating: 4.0 Pearls

If channeling James Cagney or Bette Davis while sipping an Old Fashioned is on your bucket list, consider the Hotel deLuxe. Decor at this upscale, 130-room boutique is inspired by the Golden Era of Hollywood, where Art Deco lamps, black-and-white photographs, and heavy drapes meet modern luxuries such as flat-screen TVs and iPod docks. Even the key cards scream Tinseltown. Rooms have a vintage style that is cheerful rather than sultry, with plush beds and a color scheme of lively, bright pastels. But they're fairly small (especially the miniscule bathrooms).
Embassy Suites Portland - Downtown

Embassy Suites Portland - Downtown Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The four-pearl Embassy Suites Portland - Downtown has an old-Portland atmosphere and upscale but laid-back vibe that combine to distinguish it from a standard Embassy Suite property. Formerly the historic Multnomah hotel, where Elvis stayed in 1957 and John F. Kennedy campaigned in 1960, the hotel has retained much of its original palatial architecture. The 276 rooms, including one- and two-bedroom suites, have been renovated, and some have conference tables and loft bedrooms. All come with 42-inch flat-screen HDTVs, microwaves, and mini-fridges. The hotel has a restaurant, which serves a free hot breakfast to guests, a business center and meeting spaces, a heated indoor free-form pool with whirlpool, a fitness center, and a game room. It also hosts a free evening cocktail reception. The downtown location is convenient to public transportation and several shops and eating places, but the immediate surroundings can feel a bit dicey, especially at night. Travelers might want to compare rates with the nearby Hotel Monaco, which is on a slightly less rowdy strip of downtown.
Hotel Modera

Hotel Modera Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Hotel Modera is an attractive, upscale hotel in downtown Portland. It doesn't have a stuffy feel that some iconic hotels do: Instead, everything feels modern and casual, from the streamlined lobby -- with local art, funky furniture, and a marble-and-wood front desk -- to the 174 rooms, updated with iPod docks, Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs. The Modera bills itself as a boutique, and even though it's not as small as some boutique hotels, it does have that vibe -- and it lacks the amenities of a large hotel. There is no spa or fitness center (although free passes to a nearby gym are available), but there is a tasty on-site restaurant with a renowned local chef. It's not as centrally located as other downtown hotels, but it's convenient for those visiting Portland State University.
The Benson, a Coast Hotel

The Benson, a Coast Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Benson is a landmark hotel with the classic elegance and grandeur of a historic property. Though this hotel first opened in 1913, the spacious rooms have updated features such as big flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and bathrooms with modern fixtures. The Benson offers a big, cozy lobby with plenty of space for informal meetings, as well as the Palm Court for a relaxed meal. Additional hotel features include a nice fitness center and a 24-hour business center. This historic property has a convenient central location for exploring the Pearl District and Pioneer Square.
Hotel Vintage Plaza, a Kimpton Hotel

Hotel Vintage Plaza, a Kimpton Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 117-room boutique hotel delivers the bright, quirky style and fun freebies (a nightly wine hour, no fees for pets) expected from the Kimpton brand. All rooms come with big flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and Keurig K-Cup coffeemakers. Specialty room types offer extras such as decadent Jacuzzi tubs (in the Spa Premier Rooms); balconies with huge hot tubs (in the Garden Spa rooms); and a wall of angled windows for stargazing (in the Starlight Rooms). The location in Downtown Portland is convenient, just two blocks from Pioneer Square and within walking distance of excellent restaurants (though excellent Italian fare is also available on-site at Pazzo Ristorante).
Hotel Lucia

Hotel Lucia Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This artsy boutique hotel in downtown Portland is within walking distance of numerous attractions, and its sleek rooms are decorated in neutral tones, with rich brown fabrics, leather, and woods. Beds are decked out in high-thread-count sheets and pillow-top mattresses, and tech features include iPod docks and flat-screen TVs. It's an older building, though, evidenced by the small rooms and tiny bathrooms.
Hotel Monaco Portland -- a Kimpton Hotel

Hotel Monaco Portland -- a Kimpton Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Hotel Monaco is a top-notch hotel in Downtown Portland. Sure, some will find certain freebies a bit off-beat -- namely, the evening cocktail hour set up with brushes, canvases, and easels for guests to paint with; or the offer of a free companion goldfish for your room -- but this artsy hotel is decidedly upscale. Rooms are large, with bright, whimsical decor; local art is showcased on each floor; and Red Star Tavern hosts a popular happy hour.
The Westin Portland

The Westin Portland Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The 205-room property is a solid representative of the Westin brand, located in Downtown Portland and offering a decent gym and a classy (but overpriced) American restaurant. It feels more intimate than other, larger Westins, with a cozy, stylish lobby and small library. Rooms are modern and comfortable, with 42-inchflat-screens and iPod docks; the corner rooms let in tons of natural light and showcase beautiful views of the city and mountains. But be warned that you'll have to pay extra for Wi-Fi and parking.
