Windsor Court Hotel

Windsor Court Hotel Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Celebrities, royals, and discerning travelers choose the Windsor Court for its classic style, attentive staff, and big rooms. While there’s plenty to do on the property -- including afternoon tea, a tour of the hotel’s impressive art collection, or a treatment at the lovely spa -- the Windsor Court is quietly located near all the French Quarter action. The rooms are sweet and cheerful, with classic English-style decor and upscale amenities that include free Wi-Fi, iPod docks, Molton Brown toiletries, and Keurig coffeemakers.

W New Orleans

W New Orleans Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The W New Orleans is a hip upper-middle-range hotel located in the Central Business District, within walking distance of both the French Quarter and the Museum District. It offers 423 stylish rooms with dark accent walls, plush beds and great amenities -- including flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, Tivoli Audios, and Bliss toiletries -- but they’re showing wear and tear, and bathrooms are in need of an update. The outdoor pool with cabanas; two lively bars; free car service; and well-equipped fitness center are all great features, but overall the hotel is not quite up to par with other W properties.

International House Hotel

International House Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Trendsetters and celebs stay at the International House Hotel for its quietly sexy vibe, attentive staff, and posh rooms designed by a top L.A. designer. At night, the hotel’s Loa Bar (just off the rose-scented lobby) serves fancy libations by candlelight. The rates here are surprisingly fair, and the Central Business District location is within walking distance of the French Quarter.

InterContinental New Orleans

InterContinental New Orleans Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A slate of business amenities, like an Executive Club Lounge, courier service, and on-site foreign currency exchange, make this Central Business District chain hotel popular with corporate travelers. But the business center is small and rooms have dated, generic decor. Still, the hotel's rooms are often less expensive than local competitors', and the InterContinental’s place on the St. Charles line means that you’ll feel the intermittent rumbling of the streetcar, a true New Orleans experience. During Mardi Gras, that proximity is priceless.

The Roosevelt New Orleans

The Roosevelt New Orleans Rating: 4.0 Pearls

With a grand lobby, classic rooms, a rooftop pool, a historic restaurant, and wonderful service, The Roosevelt attracts a varied crowd of celebrities, well-heeled couples, and business travelers. The upscale spa, the large fitness center, and the hotel’s central location are all great features, but guests should note that there are fees for Wi-Fi and for valet parking.

The Whitney Wyndham Hotel

The Whitney Wyndham Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This perfectly adequate mid-range hotel in the Central Business District, a block from the Charles streetcar line, has more history and character than your typical chain. Wyndham has made graceful use of the city’s first Whitney Bank branch, built around 1890, by preserving much of the old bank’s lobby and even restoring its vintage vault as a private dining room. But features are few, and rooms have old tube TVs and no Wi-Fi.

Hilton New Orleans Riverside

Hilton New Orleans Riverside Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Hilton New Orleans Riverside bills itself as a conference center for business travelers, but it feels more like a resort with its riverfront location and fantastic lineup of options for recreation, including indoor tennis courts, personal training, and Pilates classes (easily the most inclusive fitness offerings of any hotel in the city). The hotel's rooms are generic, but comfortable and functional. There are fees for Wi-Fi, the fitness center, and the business center, and the spa menu's body treatments are a bit limited. But all in all, this is a fine pick for anyone wanting to explore the city -- the location on the Mississippi River, near the French Quarter, is excellent.

Sheraton New Orleans Hotel

Sheraton New Orleans Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Sheraton is a large, mid-range business hotel located right on the border of the French Quarter and the Central Business District. It features 1,100 spacious rooms with modern technology -- such as flat-screen TVs -- great beds, and clean bathrooms with shower/tub combos. The large fitness center, extensive meeting space, and on-site dining options will appeal to business travelers, but the rooftop pool, two art galleries, and central location make it a solid pick for leisure travelers as well.

Loft 523 New Orleans

Loft 523 New Orleans Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Loft 523 is the platinum standard of New Orleans’ boutique hotels, ushering in sleek, industrial decor (no fussy florals here) in spacious lofted rooms with large, luxurious baths. Because of its size (only 18 rooms), Loft 523 lacks some amenities -- guests will have to go around the corner to sister hotel International House for a restaurant or fitness room -- but room service is available through a popular nearby restaurant, and the property can often be a better overall bargain than a full-service luxury hotel. Partiers will appreciate that hip nightclub Le Phare is attached to the hotel, though room noise levels are louder during club hours.

Wyndham Riverfront New Orleans

Wyndham Riverfront New Orleans Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The Wyndham Riverfront is housed in a former rice mill in the Central Business District, an area where retrofitted warehouse condos are springing up -- but the hotel doesn't take full advantage of its great historic bones. Rooms are chain-like, but large, and most have sofa beds; the on-site restaurant is solid; and the location is convenient to cruise terminals and a massive convention center.
