Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona

Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The 98-room Mandarin Oriental is one of the most luxurious hotels in Barcelona, and certainly has one of the most recognizable hotel brand names in the city. It has a great location on Passeig de Gracia, and offers all the high-end amenities one would expect from the chain, including a rooftop dipping pool, a beautiful spa, and numerous restaurants (one has a Michelin star). All-white rooms are sleek, and some have balconies, but layouts can be a bit awkward. While the service is excellent, some guests complain about street noise and there is a pesky fee for Wi-Fi.

Majestic Hotel & Spa Barcelona

Majestic Hotel & Spa Barcelona Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The 276-room Majestic Hotel & Spa has a prime location, steps from designer shops and Gaudi monuments. All rooms were renovated in 2011, giving them a fresh, modern feel. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, stocked minibars, Nespresso machines, and interesting art. Spacious marble bathrooms have Bulgari toiletries, bathrobes, and rainfall showerheads. For more luxury, the 41 suites offer views over Passeig de Gracia; some have private terraces and 24-hour personalized service. Families might want to choose apartments that also include full kitchens. Other hotel highlights include a small rooftop pool and a rooftop terrace with an atmospheric bar and great city views; a contemporary on-site spa; and a fitness center. The restaurant serves a morning breakfast buffet and evening tapas; the bar offers live piano music; and the business center has free Internet.

El Palace Hotel

El Palace Hotel Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The Palace oozes elegance and old-world charm. Housed in an early 20th-century building a few blocks from the Gothic Quarter, the hotel is popular among well-heeled families, couples, and business travelers. The property boasts a Michelin-starred restaurant, Caelis; car service to the airport and major attractions; and a small but modern fitness center. The exclusive spa features the only Temazcal sauna in Spain, Anne Semonin products, and traditional Maya treatments. Classic, elegant rooms have upholstered walls, plush beds, and modern bathrooms with separate showers and tubs. Some even have Roman bath-style tubs. Updated in-room amenities include flat-screen TVs, minibars, DVD players, and free Wi-Fi. But there are no coffeemakers in the rooms, and you should expect to pay a hefty price for breakfast.

Eurostars Monumental

Eurostars Monumental Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Located in the popular L'Eixample neighborhood, the Eurostars Monumental is part of the Eurostars chain (with several hotels in Barcelona). This 45-room property isn't as luxe as the nearby Eurostars BCN Design, but decor is fresh and attractive, and rates here are cheaper. Rooms have dark wood headboards, coffee-colored throws, tan furniture, funky light fixtures, and wall-mounted flat-screen TVs; some have balconies with views of Sagrada Familia Cathedral. Marble bathrooms are spacious with large vanities. Amenities are few, but there's a small lobby bar serving coffee and cocktails.

H10 Universitat Hotel

H10 Universitat Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The H10 Universitat Hotel has a central location about a block from the University of Barcelona. This 94-room hotel has contemporary decor with dark wood and pops of color. All rooms have big flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and appealing bathrooms. Hotel features include a restaurant and meeting space, but there is no spa, pool, or fitness center. This central hotel offers good value within easy walking distance of sights such as Las Ramblas and the Gothic Quarter.

Hotel Constanza Barcelona

Hotel Constanza Barcelona Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 46-room value hotel combines modern comforts with classic European touches, such as French balconies that overlook a quiet street in the Eixample district. The Hotel Constanza prides itself on providing a hip atmosphere: communal areas have low lighting and stylish decor. The earthy color palette and modern vibe extend to the guest rooms, which offer updated amenities and spacious bathrooms with sleek, minimalist fixtures. Some rooms are a bit on the dark side, though, as ones in the rear of the hotel may face a brick wall. A highlight is the seasonal rooftop terrace with city views, although it is only open during warmer months.

Grupotel Gran Via 678

Grupotel Gran Via 678 Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Grupotel Gran Via 678 is an upscale hotel with modern style. Though not huge, chic guest rooms are decently sized for a European urban hotel and feature a red, black, and white color scheme, modern artwork, and contemporary furnishings that make for a streamlined feel. All have flat-screen TVs and well-stocked minibars -- and some even have lovely views of the tree-lined street below. The modern vibe extends to the bathrooms, though the glass doors may make some guests uncomfortable. Public spaces include a small outdoor pool, casual bar, and lobby with contemporary decor, albeit somewhat tired furnishings. Comfortable, clean, and centrally located, this hotel is a solid value.

Axel Hotel Barcelona

Axel Hotel Barcelona Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This 105-room hotel in the heart of Barcelona bills itself as a "gay hotel" that is "hetero-friendly." It is in the heart of the Eixample neighborhood, the city's dynamic gay area with great restaurants and nightlife. The theme here is seduction -- nude photographs adorn the walls, naked mannequins hang out in the hallways, and see-through glass bathroom walls make for little privacy in the rooms. The rooms are large here, and upgrading to a suite will get you a very nice private terrace. Amenities include a top-notch fitness center, rooftop pool and bar, and a relaxing spa. This is a good choice for couples, gay or straight, looking for a sexy atmosphere and a modern scene.

H10 Casanova

H10 Casanova Rating: 4.0 Pearls

This upscale property has a convenient location in the Eixample neighborhood, within walking distance to tourist sights and public transportation. While it is a pretty standard chain hotel, it does have a few great amenities, including an attractive spa with six treatment rooms and two tents in the garden, a nice restaurant serving Mexican and Mediterranean cuisine, and a bar with DJ sessions on weekends. Rooms are clean and bright, with contemporary decor, and modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. In short, this is a solid pick both for business and leisure travelers, and for exploring the city on foot.

Cram Hotel

Cram Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Cram hotel is chic and colorful, with more style than a lot of competing properties. The white circular halls that run the height of the hotel and the sleek furnishings in bright hues of red and orange make for a modern-retro vibe. Cram offers several options for cocktails and cuisine -- the rooftop Anemos Terrace Bar that overlooks the pool area and features gorgeous city views, the funky Mareva Cocktail Bar, and the trendy Catalonian restaurant Gaig. They are a definite perk, as is the hotel's central location. However, the rooms are on the small side and the bathrooms are a bit plain.
