Casa De Campo

Casa De Campo Rating: 5.0 Pearls

The D.R.'s classiest, most famous resort since 1974, the Casa de Campo hotel is part of a massive, 7,000-acre resort community that includes three world-renowned golf courses, an immaculate beach, a marina, the quaint "town" of Altos de Chavon, and numerous other on-site activities. It can take some time to get from place to place, but each of the spacious rooms comes with a golf cart for guests' use. Though the Eden Roc may offer more luxurious rooms, Casa de Campo certainly offers more activities and some prefer its upscale, yet slightly more laid-back, vibe.

Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville Don Pablo Collection

Luxury Bahia Principe Bouganville Don Pablo Collection Rating: 4.5 Pearls

This 244-room adults-only resort is adjacent to the Grand Bahia Principe La Romana and falls under the brand's more luxurious Don Pablo Collection. The property has colonial-style architecture and spacious, cheerful accommodations. There are plenty of opportunities for romance -- there is a long beach for strolling, a pretty dock for private dinners, and sunset views of the bay. The downside: The turquoise waves and beaches in Punta Cana are better for swimming -- it's a fact. That being said, those in search of peace and quiet will be attracted to the elegant lobby area, the stunning pool overlooking the beach, and access to great golfing and day trips to nearby islands.

Dreams La Romana

Dreams La Romana Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Reopened in 2008, this 751-room mega-resort has immaculate pools, beautiful rooms, an excellent kids' club, a great cocktail menu with name-brand liquor, and some of the D.R.’s best all-inclusive food -- from fine French cuisine to fish and chips. It's a great pick, though the beach is fairly small and unimpressive.

Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace Resort

Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace Resort Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This 330-room mid-range resort for all ages attracts a European crowd (expect to hear Spanish and Italian) and has about half the number of rooms as its sister property next door. Fewer guests, expansive grounds, and full access to features at both resorts make this the slightly higher-priced option. The rooms are nothing to write home about, but have been upgraded with white comforters and flat-screen TVs; bathrooms have either tub/shower combos or walk-in showers with removable nozzles and limited toiletries (there's a convenience store on-site for the essentials). Kiddos stay busy with shallow swimming on the beach, a children's pool, and kids' zone next door. There are limited reservations for a la carte restaurants, but a late-night wood-fire pizzeria stays open all night.

Grand Bahia Principe La Romana

Grand Bahia Principe La Romana Rating: 3.5 Pearls

This 400-plus-room resort on the coast west of La Romana has sunset views, a calm bay, and zero neighbors, except for its sister Bouganville resort next door. (Getting here will require a pricey taxi ride from any airport.) Though lacking the iconic turquoise waves of Punta Cana, this is a relaxed environment for families and couples (the latter can schedule a romantic private dinner at the end of the picturesque dock). The decent food choices (including uncrowded a la carte restaurants), bars, entertainment, long shoreline, and sizable but basic suites help make this a great value. Guests have access to an on-site golf course and spa for additional fees.

Costa Caribe Coral Hotel & Resort

Costa Caribe Coral Hotel & Resort Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Designed for partiers on a budget, this Juan Dolio all-inclusive has a 24-hour sports bar, an all-night snack bar, a casino, and a weekend disco that even locals frequent. Rooms (renovated in 2012) are generic, and the clean, shallow-water beach doesn’t compare to those in Punta Cana or La Romana. But the superior food makes this place a pretty good deal.

Catalonia Gran Dominicus

Catalonia Gran Dominicus Rating: 3.0 Pearls

There are just a handful of resorts on this particular stretch of beach about 20 minutes from La Romana, and this mid-range, 415-room property is a solid choice that draws an international crowd. This all-inclusive's best attributes are the beach (with great waves, snorkeling, and sunset views), and the food and drink spots, which are spread out over manicured grounds. It's a popular option for both families (children get their own section at the main buffet) and couples, especially honeymooners, who receive an instant upgrade when suites are available. Room types vary greatly: Non-Privilege are as basic as it gets, but Privilege rooms have canopy beds, stocked minibars, and sightly more contemporary decor. Plenty of sports activities can be enjoyed on-site and excursions are available for those who get a case of claustrophobia. Free Wi-Fi is spotty at best.

Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach

Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This family-friendly, 613-room all-inclusive resort has a mostly European clientele. Basic rooms have received a slight refresh (no more patterned bedspreads), and the limited all-inclusive amenities help keep prices low. Three pools, trapeze lessons, and tennis are available, but most guests flock to the beach. For drinks, guests will have to take turns standing in line to get small pours in plastic cups, and repeat the process until the (beautiful) sunset. Food is not a highlight: there’s a limit on a la carte reservations, and the main buffet seems to have a crowd at all times. Overall, though, this is an affordable choice for families. Romantics should consider the VIP upgrade.

Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus

Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Located on the D.R.’s softest and calmest stretch of beach, the highly active Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus is a pretty solid family option -- three clean pools, attentive service, and excellent scuba diving (though for a cost). But because the rooms are dated and poorly maintained, and the food is only good (not great), the newly renovated Dreams La Romana is a better option for the same price.
