Z Hotel

Z Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The Z is a hip boutique in the up-and-coming neighborhood of Long Island City, Queens. Stylish rooms have dark grey accent walls with funky murals, floor-to-ceiling windows offering sweeping Manhattan views, and tons of fun details. The attractive, industrial-chic lounge is the meeting point for guests day and night, and offers a solid drinks and tapas menu well into the evening. The hotel's location (a short walk from seven subway lines and one stop on the E train from Midtown); outstanding freebies (Wi-Fi, hourly shuttle to and from Manhattan, loaner bikes, and phone calls); and reasonable rates (cheaper than Manhattan hotels) make it a great value. It's a chic option for those who don’t mind staying in a quieter part of the city.

Wyndham Garden Long Island City Manhattan View Hotel

Wyndham Garden Long Island City Manhattan View Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The spacious rooms -- with modern amenities, pillowtop mattresses, and sleek bathrooms -- are the highlight at this lovely budget-friendly property, which can offer incredibly reasonable rates because it is located in Long Island City. But its location -- on a desolate, warehouse-filled block -- is also its drawback. Amenities are minimal but include a small fitness center and 24-hour business center, as well as a local Italian restaurant.

Hotel Vetiver

Hotel Vetiver Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Hotel Vetiver is a mid-range hotel located in a somewhat unattractive area of Queens that offers easy subway access to Midtown Manhattan. It features 62 bright, contemporary rooms with flat-screen TVs and iPod docks, and small bathrooms with walk-in showers and Rusk toiletries. Some rooms have balconies with partial Manhattan views, and a few have kitchenettes, but there are some inconsistencies in terms of in-room amenities (some have closets, others have mini-fridges…). The fitness center is tiny and there’s no full restaurant on-site, but a solid free continental breakfast and free Wi-Fi add value.

Holiday Inn L.I. City - Manhattan View

Holiday Inn L.I. City - Manhattan View Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This branch of the popular Holiday Inn chain fulfills visitors’ brand expectations, with the added bonus of stunning skyline views from the up-and-coming (and budget-friendly) Queens neighborhood of Long Island City. Manhattan’s main tourist sights are easily accessible via seven nearby subway lines. All the staples of a mid-range chain -- comfortable beds, free Wi-Fi, a serviceable restaurant and a small fitness center -- are provided for a very attractive price.
