Fontainebleau Resort Miami Beach

Fontainebleau Resort Miami Beach Rating: 4.5 Pearls

After its $1 billion facelift in 2008, the Fontainebleau's 1,504 new rooms, nine pools, phenomenal spa and gorgeous design are hard to top. Despite its sexy ads and nightclub, it's a relaxed property that attracts mostly families and convention goers. Its peacful Miami Beach location - next to the also snazzy Eden Roc hotel - is 30 blocks from the South Beach action.

Grand Beach Hotel

Grand Beach Hotel Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Big, beige, and offering striking ocean views, the 430-room Grand Beach Hotel is a relaxing alternative to the hectic South Beach scene. Guests get more space for their money; big, contemporary suites have balconies, mini-kitchens, and separate living rooms. There are several pools -- including an adults-only tranquility pool on the 7th floor -- and the hotel is located on a long stretch of uncluttered beachfront. Few dining options are within walking distance, but there is a full-service restaurant on-site and a small bar in the lobby. There is also a sunny fitness center, bikes for rent, and free Wi-Fi but there's a pesky fee for chairs on the beach.

Palms Hotel and Spa

Palms Hotel and Spa Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A clean, lively beachside resort in sleepy Miami Beach, the Palms takes style lessons from the hip boutiques -- think poolside house music, a fun tiki bar, updated rooms, and an Aveda spa. But for nightlife, revelers must head to South Beach, a five- to 10-minute taxi ride away.

Eden Roc Miami Beach

Eden Roc Miami Beach Rating: 4.0 Pearls

High-up in Miami Beach -- $20 taxi to the South Beach action -- the only real draw to the location is the pricey wining and dining at the snazzy Fontainebleau resort next door. However, with three infinity pools, 631 comfortable rooms (all redone in 2009), and a wonderful spa, the Eden Roc is a cheaper (yet still high-quality) alternative for folks doing business at the Fontainebleau.

Tradewinds Apartment Hotel

Tradewinds Apartment Hotel Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The 160-room Tradewinds Apartment Hotel attracts guests with its spacious suites -- with nice kitchens, dining areas, and big flat-screen TVs -- along with a tropical outdoor pool surrounded by lounge chairs and cabanas. Coin operated on-site washer and dryers are convenient while bike rentals are a nice bonus. The surrounding neighborhood is quiet and largely residential, with the beach located a five-minute walk away, but there is no restaurant or bar on-site.

Churchill Suites Crown Miami Beach

Churchill Suites Crown Miami Beach Rating: 3.5 Pearls

More condo than hotel -- most rooms host permanent residents -- the Crown features huge suites with fully stocked kitchens, washers and dryers, and pull-out sofas. For families or small groups, it's a great option. But it's a strictly D.I.Y. experience -- don't expect any service or organized fun.

Courtyard By Marriott Miami Beach Oceanfront

Courtyard By Marriott Miami Beach Oceanfront Rating: 3.5 Pearls

The Courtyard by Marriott Miami Beach Oceanfront is a four-pearl chain hotel for guests looking to enjoy a quieter section of the city's famous sandy beaches. The 333-room venue has four on-site casual restaurants, including a Cadillac Cafe buffet breakfast and a tapas joint for dinner. The hotel is divided into two towers -- the original Cadillac Tower and the newer Ocean Tower, added in 2013. Though both towers have Art Deco style lobbies and beach access, the rooms in the Ocean Tower are more modern with hues of white, blue, and gray. The more lively South Beach scene is five minutes away by car.

Design Suites at Castle Beach

Design Suites at Castle Beach Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Design Suites at Castle Beach has received mixed reviews for its staff and facilities over the years. The 115-room high-rise building houses a combination of residences and vacation rentals, and some residences available to travelers seem to have been poorly maintained. A number of guests cite unkempt rooms, hallway odors, malfunctioning elevators and a lack of attentive management. But others reported that their rooms were tidy and well-equipped. One fact almost all guests agree on, though, is that many of the hotel's employees seem to have had no professional training and are occasionally rude. If top-notch customer service and a guarantee of sparkling, up-to-date amenities are more important than affordable rates, it's probably best to book elsewhere.

Freehand Miami

Freehand Miami Rating: 3.0 Pearls

Combining a '70s hippie vibe with thoughtful design, The Freehand is a hostel for sophisticated young travelers who care about style, atmosphere, and a good party. This welcoming property offers a range of rooms from an eight-person dorm to private bungalows. The bar scene is renowned, drawing locals along with visitors for DJ-spun tunes and artisanal cocktails. Look for other digs if a solid night's sleep is more important than socializing, as the revelry often continues into the wee hours.

Best Western Atlantic Beach Resort

Best Western Atlantic Beach Resort Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This clean, moderately priced beachfront hotel might look like a bargain, but the in-house facilities are meager -- just a small pool, a cramped fitness center and a deserted bar and restaurant. To find anything to do or eat, it's a 15-minute drive to South Beach ($10-15 each way by taxi).
