The Fairmont San Francisco

The Fairmont San Francisco Rating: 4.5 Pearls

The Fairmont combines the history, cachet, and decor of a turn-of-the-20th-century grand old dame with the amenities, technology, and corporate-dominated clientele of a large chain property. What separates it from its luxury competitors are its beautiful, well-appointed rooms, many with stunning views, and its location atop Nob Hill.
The Ritz-Carlton San Francisco

The Ritz-Carlton San Francisco Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Everything you'd expect from a Ritz -- formal, doting service; cultivated decor; tasteful, tasty dining; a luxury spa -- all in the ritziest of San Francisco neighborhoods. But while luxury competitors offer free limo rides, 24-hour butlers, or panoramic views, the Ritz lacks a wow factor. It's largely a matter of taste, of course, but we prefer the St. Regis and Mandarin Oriental.
Stanford Court San Francisco

Stanford Court San Francisco Rating: 4.0 Pearls

A historic property renovated in 2008, the Renaissance Stanford Court has several of the less endearing quirks of an older building but few of its vestigial charms. Still, it's a relative bargain for the posh Nob Hill address.
Intercontinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco

Intercontinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco Rating: 4.0 Pearls

One of the city's grandest dames, the Mark Hopkins sits regally on top of Nob Hill with dazzling views and the famous 19th-floor Top of the Mark bar. Though its elegant style and grand past earn cachet, in substance, this hotel is less impressive (and usually less expensive) than its Nob Hill neighbors: Rooms are dated, and the on-site restaurant doesn't serve dinner.
The Scarlet Huntington

The Scarlet Huntington Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Taken over in late 2011 by Singapore-based Grace International, this 136-room historic hotel in swanky Nob Hill has an attentive staff, a quiet, intimate atmosphere, and old-world grandeur to spare. Homey rooms, though not quite luxurious, are large for the price. Plus, guests can use the indoor pool and other facilities at the excellent spa for free. All in all, one of the city's best boutiques.
Hotel Mayflower

Hotel Mayflower Rating: 3.0 Pearls

The Mayflower Hotel dates back to 1929 and offers clean, budget-friendly accommodations in an historic building with some modern updates and artsy murals. Some travelers find the property tired-looking, while others consider it charming. It’s a good value for basic rooms and a free breakfast in a convenient downtown location.
Orchard Hotel

Orchard Hotel Rating: 3.0 Pearls

This 104-room hotel between Union Square and Nob Hill boasts LEED certification but not much else. It's eco-friendly -- and proud of it -- but that's about as special as the hotel gets. Rooms are comfortable and clean, and amenities are nondescript. A fine but somewhat boring choice with affordable rates in a central location.
Cornell Hotel de France

Cornell Hotel de France Rating: 3.0 Pearls

If cookie-cutter chain rooms aren't your thing, this mid-range family-owned boutique hotel is a good pick for francophiles and art lovers. The lobby and restaurant take the French theme to an extreme with displays of swords, shields, tapestries, and statues, but the 50 individually decorated guestrooms are are light-filled and serene. Travelers will likely appreciate the lobby stocked with tourist brochures, free coffee, and an honor system cookie jar. Jeanne D'Arc, the cozy medieval restaurant in the basement, offers a reasonably priced four-course dinner with both ambiance and good food. The location is close to Union Station and the cable car to Fisherman's Wharf. The hotel is not air-conditioned; those who prefer a modern vibe and air-conditioning, try Hotel G.
