Cabo Azul Resort

Cabo Azul Resort Rating: 4.5 Pearls

Cabo Azul Resort offers a departure from Los Cabos' typical party scene, with a location outside the more authentic and subdued San Jose del Cabo, and a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere. Although a taxi or bus is necessary to visit San Jose del Cabo or Cabo San Lucas, some may appreciate the quieter atmosphere. The 144 villa-style rooms come with modern amenities, such as stainless steel kitchen appliances and flat-screen TVs, as well as casually elegant decor (especially nice touches include airy linens draped over the bed headboards, wooden lanterns, and bamboo-covered ceilings). As for the rest of the resort, it's impressive from all angles as well, featuring a three-level infinity pool, quaint outdoor fire pits, and tasty restaurants.
Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos

Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos Rating: 4.5 Pearls

A great family-friendly option for Los Cabos, the 619-suite all-inclusive Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos offers guests a decent variety of activities and facilities. For the young ones, there's the kids water park, kiddy pool, and kids' club. For the adults, the on-site spa, relaxing adult-only pools, and swim-up bar in the infinity pool are definite perks. Although the beach isn't swim-friendly due to rough waves, the pools offer more than enough space for taking a dip. Suites are spacious and luxurious, and echo the hotel's overall vibe -- big, clean, and modern. They also come with marble bathrooms, soaking tubs, and patios or balconies. The property was rebranded as a Hyatt in late 2013 and will be undergoing renovations in 2014. tag:revisit 5/1/2014

Alegranza Rating: 4.0 Pearls

Far removed from the party atmosphere of Cabos San Lucas, this upscale property is comprised of 95 residences on beautifully landscaped grounds that include pools, putting greens, fire pits, a fitness center, tennis court, and restaurant. Units are spacious, with large living rooms, full kitchens, and private yards or patios. Spanish pop star Enrique Iglesias is part-owner of this quiet and well-kept property, mostly frequented by couples and families on long vacations. It is a 15-minute hike from the beach, which has rougher waves than the southern shores. Families hoping to be near calmer waters may consider Villa la Estancia, which also offers large rooms and is right on tranquil Medano Beach.
The Grand Mayan Los Cabos

The Grand Mayan Los Cabos Rating: 4.0 Pearls

The atmosphere at the Grand Mayan is peaceful (aside from pushy timeshare sellers): The massive pool looks out onto a pristine beach, the Brio Spa has soothing decor, and the chic and spacious rooms feature private balconies and bathrooms with Jacuzzi tubs and walk-in showers. In the quiet area of San Jose del Cabo (as opposed to party-hearty Cabo San Lucas), the hotel is within walking distance of town and caters toward couples with its sexy open bathrooms and upscale restaurants (although there are some mixed reviews on the food). Drawbacks, however, are fairly significant -- the pool temperature is often chilly, and the beach is riddled with jellyfish.
Bel Air Collection Resort & Spa Los Cabos

Bel Air Collection Resort & Spa Los Cabos Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Although the mid-range, 100-room Bel Air Collection Resort & Spa isn't the most luxurious resort in Los Cabos, it has a pretty location along a gorgeous stretch of beach, a sprawling oceanfront pool with swim-up bar, and an optional all-inclusive plan. Thoughtful extras add value: welcome drinks, a continental breakfast (though it starts early, so late risers may miss all the good stuff), tea and snacks at sunset, petit fours with turndown service, and an excellent happy hour at the bar. On the downside, the rooms are a bit small compared with competing resorts. However, decor is contemporary, the bathrooms have jetted tubs, and the kitchenettes are handy when trying to save a few bucks -- there's even a grocery store within walking distance.
Casa Natalia

Casa Natalia Rating: 3.5 Pearls

Casa Natalia is a gorgeously executed 16-room boutique in downtown San Jose del Cabo. Everything from the quaint lobby with original artwork to the on-site restaurant has charming local flair. Even standard rooms are spacious, with living rooms and balconies featuring hammocks (though the tube TVs are one notable drawback). The only way to beat the heat on-site is an attractive but small and walled-in pool area, but the beach is only a short drive away. Book here if you want romantic seclusion -- but if a beachfront party spot is more your speed, consider the slightly pricier options in the nearby hotel zone.
